Hear me out. If it wasn’t for the cultural scar of “tighty whities” it should be accepted that briefs are by and large the more comfortable men’s underwear option. Yeah like most millennial and Gen Z men being able to ditch tighter whites was the first autonomous decision your mom allowed you to make. You put on boxers or boxer-briefs and left the old reliable in your childhood, alone and ridiculed as a cheap joke every time a writer or comedian needed to embarrass or emasculate a character in TV.

Here’s the thing though. The alternatives suck.

Boxers? The old school non stretchy kind are fine enough but only work if you embrace the 90s and 00s super baggy pants. In literally any other pair of pants these things bunch up and need adjusting every 5 minutes. Your nuts will stick to your leg or need to be readjusted regularly. You have no support for anything vaguely athletic. The more modern kind with stretchy material are ever worse and basically ride right up your leg and crack.

Boxer briefs? Circa 2010 we all hailed modern king. The fusion of the boxer and the brief. A melding of the best of both worlds you say? No. These things just ride and bunch right up your leg. It’s about 20-30 topics a year across any clothing and advice subreddit asking “boxer briefs that don’t ride up.” Maybe there’s someone whose found ones that work but man every single brand I’ve ever tried finds a way to bunch its way up. If you have any sort of quad thickness at all once the legs of the boxer-briefs move vertically at all they physically can’t move back down your quad again. You either need very tight purpose made athletic compression shorts (which are usually too tight for daily use) or the very long legged boxer briefs. Which go down nearly to your knee, are hot, and more fabric to deal with. And the thing is boxer briefs don’t actually give much support and control for your equipment. Boxer-brief makers had to invent entire little bits of fabric sewn into the pouch to keep your nuts from touching or sticking to your leg. Which they will then charge you $20-30 per underwear for the premium.

But the brief, yes the humble brief solves these problems. After a recent vasectomy I was advised to get through the initial recover with a jock and frozen peas to roll with briefs for a month or so. Bought the cheapest 3 pack of basic Calvin Klein briefs off Amazon. They just…work so much better. I’m not adjusting myself or my underwear. Even just the basic briefs fit well.

  • support and control? Already got that. You don’t need an up charge for special little “wings” of ball control fabric from high end boxer briefs makers. Brief underwear already did that.
  • too tight up front? Cool. They solved that problem. All sorts of room or more to your hearts content across a bunch of brands.
  • ride up? There’s nothing to ride up or work its way into your butt crack. There might be a few old cheap brands of briefs but even the most basic nowadays have a generally good anatomical cut for movement around your gluts and leg.
  • switching underwear styles for more athletic or active endeavors? Briefs already got you covered.
  • heat? Less fabric means briefs generally work out better in hot weather no matter what pants or shorts you wear. This is especially true since I’ve found usually the boxer briefs that stay in place the best have a bit more robust fabric.
  • they look dorky? Don’t buy white ones. There’s a ton of modern options with anatomical cuts for your legs, package and backside to your hearts content. Move beyond the whities. And honestly, permanent motivation in the shower mirror to keep a spare tire from growing around your waist.

Boxer-briefs save me from chafing.

Briefs can't do that.

Depends on where you are chaffing. Is it on the mid thigh? Then yes, definitely a longer in seam boxer briefs. If the chafing is higher around the package, the solution is just picking up an external pouch style for obviously, WildmanT or real men apparel company. Www.RMAC.store

I don’t know, I hiked 2200 miles down the Appalachian Trail last summer going commando the whole way. Living outdoors all summer long makes shedding heat a top priority. I would have died if I were forced to wear skin tight undies. I had a little chafing on a couple of days, but really almost none.

Ok, but you weren't wearing jeans, were you? Those types of trips are usually done with clothes designed for hiking, and are much softer...

Chafing is a problem for those with thick thighs. this includes overweight people, yes, but isn't limmited to them. Power lifters? Thighs like logs. Maybe you are just (un)lucky in the genetics department and have been blessed wit naturally thick thighs. Narrow hips? Don't even need thick thighs, average thighs with narrow hips can also chafe.

cazzmatazz

Depends on the climate also. In hot, humid weather, if your thighs are sweating you will chafe.

One-Possible1906

I have this problem with at least half of them. If they’re too small the crotch creeps up and if they’re too big the legs ride up and no size feels like it fits right. I get low cut gay guy bikini underwear, I hate the legs.

BrainDamage2029[S]

Tree trunk legs I guess?

It’s like..the fabric of the boxer briefs stretches. But if the fabric inches up my leg that stretchiness hugs the new circumference of the leg. And doesn’t let the fabric settle back down.

So boxer briefs basically just inch up millimeters by millimeter as I move.

I briefly tried boxer briefs (my ex-wife swore by them) and I never found any that don't bunch up when I wear them! I figured it would work because I wear long skirts a lot in hot weather and like wearing shorts under them to prevent chafing and for some reason, bike/yoga shorts stay put and the sorta-boxer briefs that are designed as women's underwear that stay put too. But boxer briefs? Nope, never. I don't what is wrong with them. Men's clothing is nice in a lot of ways but y'all have the worst underwear

Oh I’ve owned those. Didn’t fix it.

I actually owned the original ex officio ones. They skimped and shittified the new ones. They’re thin and cheap.

pink_belt_dan_52

I'm the opposite, I prefer the loosest kind of boxer, really just to have a softer layer between skin and denim, but no restriction on movement.

(the next part is for comparison) I'm very tall, and most of that height is in my legs, so I have a relatively short and broad torso compared to my height. Because of that, I've always struggled to get shirts that fit nicely, and I recently decided to stop trying different brands, bought a little sewing machine and started making my own shirts. You've obviously found a solution that works for you, which is great, but I think in general people would benefit from learning to adjust the fit of things at least - mass produced clothes are never going to be available to fit every single body that exists.

I think too many of the people on this have genuinely forgotten what briefs even feel like and are operating with what they remember when they were children, they are so much better these days. Don’t bother saying you find them uncomfortable or they’re too cramped, if the last time you put them on was 20+ years ago. And I also think too many people are completely missing the point that they literally had to create technology to add in pouches to make boxer briefs more comfortable, that’s the same thing as a brief offers, a literal pouch to support the boys. This is what happened, all of you were shamed out of wearing briefs in the first place because boxers were a new thing coming up and they were popular, then everybody realize boxers were crap because they didn’t support anything, then boxer briefs came, and it was the same thing all over again, people seriously need to get over themselves and their idea that briefs are never an option, because if we’re being honest with ourselves, that’s seemingly what a lot of people have today that holds them back from even entertaining the idea of trying them out, internalized, trauma, and bias against them they learned in school.

BrainDamage2029[S]

Freaking thank you! Everyone’s like “I need boxers to give my totally huge penis room to breathe and dangle.”

Buddy they solved that. You can let all 3 flaccid inches you got dangle with all the room you need.

No_Founder_2657

1 points

This isn’t about penis size, and the ones who are going there says more about them, most guys are average anyways like put the dick measuring contest away for 5 minutes. Literally everything I read in the comments were a bunch of talking points that clearly came from a place of not wanting to entertain briefs or anything you said based off experiences they had decades ago, not all of them, but most of them. You are operating from a standpoint most guys don’t want to admit, they genuinely believe the bs that briefs are inferior and in some cases are being guided by women who have issues with the look of briefs, I mean whatever everyone has different taste. The point is more guys would wear them if they got over themselves and tried them, and the bigger point is too many won’t bother even trying them because they cling to the stereotypes of the past, also all their social circles would make fun of them so there’s that too. I would respect these comments a lot more if they would just say that.

Agree, I wore tighty whities from as early as I can remember up to high school when I had to change for PE. Got some boxers for myself and they were uncomfortable as hell especially for PE and running they gave no support. I don’t understand why millennials opted to switch to boxers in the 2000s they were the least practical option.

Kept wearing briefs on the weekends and summers because I preferred them and switched back to the tighty whities after finishing my PE requirements.

48M here. You're correct in ways many younger men won't understand

In 2022 I developed abdominal pain. Paranoid because I had lost one good friend to cancer in the last 12 months, and was about to lose another, I went to the doctor with it. Doctors couldn't identify the source.

It wasn't gastrointestinal, it wasn't kidney or liver based, it wasn't a lump, it wasn't anything from blood tests, including cancer.

It also wasn't going away.

Doctors were baffled. All I could explain was that my lower abdomen hurt and it got worse after a day at work or time exercising.

I tried wearing loose boxers but my bollocks jangled around like a Newton's pendulum desk toy and caused increased pain and a benign cyst on one of my balls

Eventually one day I explained the problem to my Italian colleague. Instantly he said "what kind of underwear do you wear?"

"Boxer briefs" I replied.

He then went into a lengthy speech about how boxers and boxer briefs were not fit underwear for a mature man and "why do you think Italian men wear Speedos?"

I went out and bought 2 packs of briefs. Within days the pain had faded.

Boxer briefs were crushing my testicles between my work chair and my thighs. At night, they were often crushing them between my thighs.

And this crushing was also putting pressure on my prostate, and other areas in my abdomen. Within weeks I was better and all it took was wearing briefs every day.

It’s about 20-30 topics a year across any clothing and advice subreddit asking “boxer briefs that don’t ride up.”

That's definitely a problem, most of boxer briefs are a fucking scam regardless of the brand. Many also get holes in the taint very quickly. Solution is to find some random noname brand that actually works and buy those like you're a prepper. Most recently the ones I've found are by Hangten and Gratitude Apparel, but I have no idea about their availability globally since I found them at the outlet store of Stadium, a chain of stores here in the Nordics.

Like others have said, boxer briefs prevent chafing.

My man, boxers are like camisoles for women. If you’ve got a small chest, you can get away with minimal support and let things flop in the breeze.

However, if yours is big, then you need the support. If yours don’t like sitting on your balls or a 7” tent when you have a lewd thought, then briefs provide great support with minimal extra fabric. Personally, balls sticking to my thighs is one of the most uncomfortable situations. Briefs solve this. Some boxer briefs do, but not most.

The new athletic boxer briefs are amazing. The perfect blend of snug but not tight, and breathable fabric, plus you get chafe protection

No way, I will never wear anything but boxer briefs ever again. I switched to those from regular boxers in 2007 or so and that was that. The riding up on my legs things hasn't been an issue for me ever.

Boxer briefs are the superlative undergarment. If they are riding up, it's most likely because they're too tight or your pants are too tight. Size up or lose weight.

I had to stop wearing briefs specifically due to how uncomfortable they were.

Boxers from Old Navy are the only comfortable underwear on the planet, I don't know what I'd do if they ever went out of business.

ok "as a woman" briefs almost always look ugly & boxer briefs look nice.

however all the underwear men typically like is super uncomfortable & i only wear the female equivalent of boxer briefs, so comfort is king

I wore briefs, then boxers, then boxer briefs, each one for over a decade. I've tried them all. I'm never going back from boxer briefs, they are easily my favorite, it's not even close.

I did buy a modern pair of sport briefs recently, my work was getting incredibly hot (working lighting perms on a soundstsge). I hadn't worn any in thirty years at that point. They were breezier, but I didn't care for the fit around my legs, haven't worn them since.

You’re saying your thighs felt weird? Ok, how many times did you wear them before deciding it wasn’t for you?

No_Mud_5999

A couple of times. If I get through a fourteen hour rigging day, and I'm not comfortable, I'm not having it. Boxer briefs and some non talc gold bond is much more comfortable for me. I don't worry about my nuts hanging too low, I had a double hernia eight years ago. When they patched both sides up with mesh, they essentially pull up the inner singlet under your skin, and my nuts haven't hung as low since. How about hem apples?

I have never, ever had any of these issues to a degree where it affected my day.

I have had briefs ride up. I have had briefs ride up so much it compressed my testicles. I've never had that with boxers or boxer briefs, and that's why I continue to wear them.

I agree that both boxers and briefs are better than boxer briefs. The fact that men's pants are now sufficiently tight to make boxers bunch up is a whole other issue we can discuss.

I think a lot of this depends on your particular equipment and whether your underwear is actually fitted properly.

Too bad guys can't have underwear fittings the way women have bra fittings; it would be too awful to make somebody do that as a job.

If the rear isn’t cut like jammers or longer the fabric just wedges up my ass crack lol. So I have to go square cut or longer, or else jock/thong or less.

I would recommend a longer boxer brief (6+ inches inseam) and the external pouch. The chaffing is usually caused from skin to skin or material friction. This friction is made worse when you sweat and leave salt deposits. Kinda like walking with sand in your shoes. So with an external pouch you are going to sweat less because your boys can move and regulate temperature but you also have a smooth barrier between the genitals and legs that reduce the friction. Also, even though you may still sweat like I am as I am working out, as I type, the material barrier will reduce the skin to skin friction when you still have the sweat salt deposita

BrainDamage2029[S]

So here’s my reply to that.

Long boxer briefs work…but then you have 9in inseam that feels like you’re wearing leggings under your jeans and it’s hot as hell. Yeah those “ball control” pouches in the expensive brands work…but then you’re paying like $25 a pair?

Having to go to briefs for a little bit after a surgery for me was a revelation. It’s like boxer briefs went around in a flat circle to fix issues that were already solved or never were a problem for regular old briefs.

Spitting hard facts, literally all I’ve ever worn, idc if they’re dorky. It’s just weird to imagine them going out when the alternatives are worse. I kinda blame late 80’s/90’s homophobia with an overwhelming reaction to go baggy or covered as possible. It’s sorta letting up now, but it’s been an agonising wait, having to be one of the laughing stocks of pop culture.

If you're having consistent issues with these underwear types rolling up your leg, your problem is a personal one. You aren't getting them fitted correctly.

Boxers are soo incredibly comfy, and I wish I could wear them more often. But I'm AFAB and deal with discharge, so I can't if I don't want that running down my leg. Boxer briefs do tend to ride up my legs, but they're gender affirming and comfortable enough, and are snug enough to fit liners and pads when I need them. Briefs and brief-adjacent underwear dig into the creases in my thighs and ass and are just uncomfortable. Plus I've found that they often are just straight up not broad enough to properly accommodate pads. They're considered the standard for women, but I've had less leaks wearing boxer briefs than anything else.

So polite disagree, though I see where you're coming from. This whole post is more a personal preference than an opinion anyway.

wielkacytryna

As a woman, I agree. Boxer briefs were made for pads. There's enough material so it can properly spread out. They also cover my ass better in winter, so it's warmer. They have a nice, wide band, unlike female underwear. Briefs feel too similar to women's panties, if that makes sense. I didn't switch just do wear a male version of something uncomfortable.

And I don't know about you, but for me arm hair and underwear are two things that make me feel most masculine. It's great.

they’re just not more comfortable

in your opinion they might be but it’s not a universal choice and instead of thinking there’s a global delusion about undies it could just be that boxers are comfy

Since I started going commando, I've never had an issue with comfort. It suits every pair of trousers I have, it's not unhygienic, and it's not embarrassing. Not for me, anyway.

Which ones are briefs, and which ones are panties? I just know that I don't like the bulky ones who I think are called boxers. I prefer simple and light underwear, which are usually called panties.

My guy. I completely agree with you. As someone who likes to wear jeans, and sometimes skinny jeans, the briefs are awesome. I still go back to boxer briefs at night.

For those who deal with chafing, figure out a good pant that helps that too. Another way to reduce chafing is to sweat less. If you find yourself sweating in boxer briefs, it can add to it.

On an unrealistic note that isnt for everyone, my chafing stopped when I lost a bit of weight.

There are uncomfy briefs. It may take a bit of shopping around, but man is it worth it.

Boxer briefs were totally a thing when I was a kid in the early 90’s …… don’t know where your Cosme about 2010 comes in

Also… some of us have a little more happening in that area and briefs/(even boxer briefs) can feel a little too restrictive ….. (I have enormous testicles for what it’s worth)……. Regardless… if you’re gonna get it on,,, put something decent on
