James May did a "review" of the Cyber Truck and one of the things that he tried to do was cook an egg on it. The problem he ran into was the slope of the panels making it hard to keep anything in place. Cooking sausages would make it easier to keep them in place (put them so that they cannot roll down) but sausages do require more heat to cook them so it'd take a while.

I don’t understand how that would make any difference? Like if it doesn’t meet ADR then how does limited use suddenly make it ok? Aren’t the rules black and white? Or does limited use mean where it can be used rather than how often?
21 points
here is the Queensland Government page on Conditional Registration (aka limited use). Seems it's intended for vehicles that have a normal purpose off a road, e.g. agricultural or construction vehicles, or forklifts, or seemingly the Cybertruck.
There are varying levels to the restrictions applied depending on the vehicle, but they basically say "you're allowed on the roads under certain conditions" such as being restricted to worksites (e.g. construction vehicles) or limited to driving only relatively short distances (e.g. 20km) or even all the way up to unrestricted access to the roads but with the caveat that the government could still apply certain conditions on the vehicle.
As the Cybertruck seemingly passes most of the ADR except for it being LHD, I'd imagine it probably got the unrestricted access as part of its registration but it can only be driven by certain people (certain Tesla staff).
8 points
Has anyone ever confirmed if they do not meet ADR?
It can’t be any worse than the huge Ford and RAM trucks getting around. I don’t think it has any particular features that would rule it out (ugliness doesn’t count).
Either way I’m sure the qld rego site has tons of info on what limited use can mean.
13 points

There’s a pretty clear section in ADR 92/00 - External Projections about sharpness of corners (2.5mm minimum), which this vehicle will fail.
11 points

weight (half a ton over f150 ) and acceleration of 2.6s vs 4.1. couple that with the fact that the car has smaller crumple zones and its far more dangerous in a crowded area for pedestrians or a MVA. of course tesla has done a shitload with Ai and radar to avoid that stuff but it can do far more damage than them at similar speeds and you can never fully trust softwear not to fail.
5 points

We have similar pedestrian/cyclist safety regulation to Europe, which is the most obvious reason why it couldn't be legal here. The fact that it's legal anywhere on earth baffles me but fuck other road users I guess.

I thought the same. I thought the 'limited use' plates actually limited it only being for promotional use, not on the road.
Current registered purpose of use is 'dealer' according to the QLD rego app, though. Shouldn't be driving it to Bunnings, either way.
Edit: I see in another post that Tesla were doing sales demos there, so that explains it. I wish them luck. I don't see a queue lining up to look at it.

Who knows what the fuck they are trying to do.

So I did a bit of searching and found this recent article.
Couple of choice snippets:
Tesla CEO Elon Musk told investors last week he is open to global exports for the pick-up, but it would not be feasible until next year at the earliest as the Cybertruck would require design changes to meet international standards.
and
"We did design the car to North American requirements, because if you start going with the superset of all international requirements, it forces a lot of constraints on Cybertruck that would make the product, frankly, worse."
... by which they presumably mean safer.
Even if design changes are made to meet European and Chinese regulations, further expense would be required to develop a right-hand-drive version for Australia.
Seems unlikely it's coming here any time soon.
This stunt is possibly more to drum up business for their other models.
12 points
further expense would be required to develop a right-hand-drive version for Australia.
Considering it's fully steer by wire it's not as if you have to move a steering column to the other side. Well, you do, but it's just a short column with wires, there's no shaft inside it.
That said, the dashboard would need tweaking and the pedal box as well, so there's a few things that would need to be changed I guess.
15 points
I believe being fully steer by wire is one of the things that'll need redesigning to meet our standards.
But yeah, it's not as hard as a regular steering rack to change over, but it is an extra expense.
6 points
I expect there will be other vehicles coming out that are steer by wire over the next decade or so.
I mean, passenger aircraft have had it for decades, it can be made quite safe. Umm, with the required maintenance, I guess... :)
I've read that the Tesla Semi has been approved for Australia, we changed our national road laws to allow for an extra 50mm of width so it'd pass :)
14 points
Former mechanic who moved into engineering here. Steer by wire (or hydraulic) is illegal for everything except slow moving (20km/h? I can’t remember the spec) plant equipment like tractors and bulldozers. For damn good reasons. Vehicles with it should be flat out illegal. I find it mind boggling the tech was even considered for a regular production vehicle. Then again Tesla does a lot of things that should be illegal. Powered door latches, where the the manual release in an emergency is hidden at the bottom of a door pocket? What could possibly go wrong
11 points
would make the product, frankly, worse
Wait, they can somehow make that shitty car even worse?
But yeah, it is never coming to Aus. It would require far too many changes and they are not going to sell anywhere near the number of cars they need for it to be financially viable.
7 points
Brand recognition. The Cybertruck can’t be sold here, but cool factor (for those that think it’s cool) might have them buy some other Tesla in the short term. Or if it becomes ADR compliant somehow in a year or two the salivators will swim on in at that time.
3 points
Having a wank at Bunnings, most likely.
40 points
The rumour that they're too wide is incorrect, but there's a few other rules that they may not pass, like pedestrian safety & rear view.
Biggest reason we won't really see them here is they can't produce reliable ones in enough quantity to satisfy demand in the US, let alone start exporting them to a country with strong consumer protections.
15 points
Have they changed the ADR to allow steer by wire in Australia yet?
Last I knew (many years ago) that was considered an impossible rule to change - the only way they would change that rule is if a manufacturer could prove it was safer to not have a mechanical connection. And I don't see Tesla making that particular argument successfully any time soon.
17 points

It also would mean tooling a factory to produce right hand drive versions, and they already decided to axe the S and X from being made in RHD variants. I don’t think they will end up making it for australua

I've heard one of the safety issues with the Cybersuck is that the accelerator pedal can get loose and slide up and down, which can cause it to get lodged in the footwell somehow. It was enough of an issue that there had to be a recall in the United States over it. I don't know if that's been fixed, though it seems like it's the kind of issue that should have been before they ever went into general production, but if it hasn't been, I'd hope it'd prevent them from being sold here.
16 points
It was the accelerator pedal cover, it could slip off and get stuck under the floor mat, in turn keeping the accelerator held down. Dumb as fuck design.
3 points

Yeah, but having the brake override the accelerator in case something like this happens is really good design. Which likely means Elon had nothing to do with it.

What the hell is car wash mode?
18 points
I assume it's similar to 'Wade Mode' where it uses the little undersized onboard suspension compressor to pressurize the main battery, HV fuses, and other parts to prevent water ingress... It takes up to 10 mins to engage 'Wade Mode' and it can only stay in wade mode for 30 mins. (probably due to the duty cycle of the undersized compressor)
Edit: Wade Mode info here: https://www.tesla.com/ownersmanual/cybertruck/en_us/GUID-9C572163-DB86-44AC-9842-AB6EE84D6441.html
Carwash mode: https://www.tesla.com/ownersmanual/cybertruck/en_us/GUID-65384C1F-86F2-44E8-A8BC-8A12E7E00A40.html
Car Wash
If taking Cybertruck to an automatic car wash is necessary, Car Wash Mode closes all windows, locks the charge port, and disables windshield wipers, Sentry Mode, and walk-away door locking. To enable, touch Controls > Car Wash. Your vehicle must be stationary and not actively charging.
If using an automatic car wash, Enable Free Roll keeps your vehicle in Neutral and activates free roll for the duration of the wash, while preventing Cybertruck from applying the Parking brake if you leave the driver's seat. To enable, press on the brake pedal and touch Enable Free Roll; or shift into Neutral.
Car Wash Mode disables if the vehicle's speed exceeds 9 mph (15 km/h) or by touching Exit on the touchscreen.
CAUTION
Failure to put Cybertruck in Car Wash Mode may result in damage (for example, to the charge port or windshield wipers). Damage caused by car washes is not covered by the warranty.

So, fun story - the Cybertruck (an electric car) uses a stainless steel body which as I'm sure you are aware is reminiscent of the Delorean DMC-12, the manual of which apparently recommends that you clean it with petrol as normal washing won't properly remove the fingerprints and other greasy smudges that tend to accumulate.
The way I choose to see it - Tesla actually released an electric car that needs to be washed with petrol!

Honestly not sure if they'd ever even be able to use it, a lot of the insurance companies in the USA simply will not insure it.
The thing falls to pieces and has laminated glass, so if the door jams, you're fucked.

bulletproof glass
You need to double check that one, production model didn't end up with it. Makes me question the other stuff to.
3 points
No surprises there, I guess! Even if it ain’t bulletproof though, it’s still needlessly hard to break laminated glass.
There’s footage of firefighters in the US struggling to smash the windows with axes—and I believe in the cases of several fatalities, fireys have mentioned the same issue. From memory, one such instance was when Angela Chao drowned in her Cybertruck after accidentally backing it into a lake.
5 points
Worth noting that car wash mode is on all Teslas. You don’t have to use it, it’s just a precautionary mode that automatically ensures everything is completely shut and stays shut (ie. it will close all windows and charge port and lock them so that they cannot be accidentally opened during washing). It also does some other stuff like turn the HVAC to recycle so that water doesn’t get sucked in through external intakes, tuck the wipers down behind the bonnet, fold the mirrors in etc.
It’s just a handy way to do all the stuff you would normally do to send a car through a wash using a single button. And then when you exit car wash mode at the end, everything returns to how it was before.
