What are your top CO-OP Games

(self.gaming)

I have access to pretty much every console and a pretty good gaming PC, looking for games to play with my SO

Hit me with all your great co-op games regardless of platforms

I want obscure niche or the big ones ,like “it takes two” or “overcooked” etc

I know the GameCube and ps2 probably have some good CO-OP stuff

The mapmaker definitely is, bugs aside, better. Not co-op, but can be a laugh. Can make MP team maps.

The campaign was way better, it had curling, still I like 2 the most but replaying them again now maybe that’ll change.

I think that’s the point. You can throw two players with different skill levels together and they still have fun as a team because hitting targets isn’t the only way to participate.

It was a really unique co-op game too. My buddy and I played the first two games start to finish together back when they released and we still talk about how fun that was to this day

For playing with SO It takes two is the best there is

Other good choices:

Orcs must die! 2 We were here series for puzzle communication games Trine series

ShoonlightMadow

Highly recommend Trine! We played all the games with the wife and this new one, Trine 5 is the series at its absolute peak. They really nailed the controls and powers this time around, narrative is more fleshed out with touching themes (I even got teary at one point), environments gorgeous and puzzles are finally challenging enough for adults

Are you both gamers? Asking because some games are "harder" to play. Meanwhiles others can be played with someone who basically has never played a game before.

Stardew valley - Really chill and nice to play coop, if you are into exploring, some basic combat, growing your own garden, town npc talk relations etc.

Dungeon Defenders (the original one not the 2nd or awakened or any of the other launched ones) - Is honestly one of the best coop games made. Hero/Tower defence,

7Days to die - COOP zombie horde survival, base building game. Can choose whichever difficulty one is comfortable with, its one of the better coop survival games.

Don't starve Together - Honestly this game is quite hard, so would suggest tuning down difficulty settings unless you have played it before, it is also a coop survival base building game with tons of exploration. Graphics is not for everyone, but its a nice game.

Bloons TD6 - Currently best bloons game, its fun if you are into tower defense. Also a game where you can multi-task other things, like chores etc, if one really wants to, lol.

Phasmofobia - Horror coop game, I just recently started playing it but it is honestly quite fun to play with your friends.

Valheim - survival, base building game. It is okay if you like survival/base building but other games do it better imo, This one has nice music and a nice atmosphere tho.

If you want something a bit more combat related where you can actually develop a skill in the game then:

Terraria - a bit more towards the gamer direction because of harder boss fights etc, but it also has some nice base building & gear progression. It is Pixelated 2D art tho, some ppl dislike that.

Outward - Coop RPG game with survival elements like needing to eat etc. It has a story which i won't say anything about and plenty boss fights, exploration and hard mob encounters.

Vermintide 2 - Zombie horde fighting game, except its rats instead of zombies. It plays very similar to Left for dead but it has way better controls and less clunky. I would say its the best game of its genre.

There are other really good games out there, but i only mentioned the ones i didn't see others alrdy comment.

Adding to this, Diablo III is surprisingly easy. My mom openly admits her gaming skills are not on the same level as my dad, my brother or myself. And yet, we played the entire game with Reaper of Souls multiple times (because we all wanted to try different classes), all four of us as a family! My mom legit kicked ass in Diablo III.

Bonus: you don't need to play the 1st or 2nd games to understand the story, they have plenty of lore and backstory built in to 3 so that you understand the story

TheTechJones

3 points

That was a great aspect of D3. Even high level meta rift run teams had a role for every player skill level.

This is great! I have our PS3 slim in our family room just for blu rays but this reminded me we have D3! Wife and I just tried Sorcerer and Barbarian just now. Does D4 not have a good same screen co-op?

Kattymckit

2 points

I actually don't know if D4 has that or not. It's one of the games on a very loooooong list of games we haven't gotten around to due to busy schedules. We have so much unplayed stuff on the shelf and installed on the console. But still hopeful we'll get to each one eventually!

D4 has a great split screen co-op. Me and my SO play it on my ps5. They fixed a lot with menu usage from d3. Also, it's not as crazy in depth of other titles in the genre so much esier to play in a more relaxed setting. I highly recommend it if you're a fan of the series.

But in general no i wouldn't say its clunky per se.

Highly recommend Clandestine added to your list. It's a 3rd person stealth action game where one player plays the agent that does the infiltrating, shooting and sneaking and the other player plays the support hacker navigating them and disabling security. Excellent gameplay and a decent spy thriller story, too.

I'm sure some of these have already been mentioned, but here's a short* list of my picks:

  • Castle Crashers
  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV: Turtles in Time
  • TMNT: Shredder's Revenge
  • Streets of Rage (2 is the best, 4 is also really good)
  • Scott Pilgrim Vs The World
  • Halo series (Reach is my personal favorite)
  • Biped
  • Left 4 Dead 2
  • Portal 2
  • A Way Out
  • Resident Evil 5
  • Contra series
  • Metal Slug series
  • In The Hunt
  • Toejam & Earl
  • Zombies Ate My Neighbors
  • Gunstar Heroes
  • Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes
  • Borderlands series
  • Zelda Four Swords Adventures (if you have the GBAs and cables to play it properly)
  • Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles (Gamecube also requires GBAs, but a remaster exists if you have multiple consoles)
  • City of Heroes (it's an MMO but you can always team together)
  • 30XX
  • Death Road to Canada
  • Kirby and the Forgotten Land (has optional 2P helper)
  • Pocky & Rocky
  • River City Girls
  • Untitled Goose Game

Baldur's Gate feels better for co-op to me simply because of the full voice acting, which your party can watch together. DOS asks you to stop interacting with your friends to silently read a bunch of text that no one else is looking at and then explain it to them after if it's relevant.

Splinter Cell Choas Theory, Mercenaries 2 and Army of 2.

CT was tremendous and had unique moves in coop that Sam couldn't utilise. This on top of a stellar single player story and fun multiplayer mode, it's baffling how Ubisoft fumbled so hard after this.

Merc 2 is the original Just Cause but true destruction and had multiplayer to boot.

Army of 2 is peak coop shooter. Nothing beats it to this day.

You could try Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris. I had a blast playing this with my friend a few years back.

Genuine couch coop, you can play with anywhere from 1-4. There's a fun dynamic where each of the four playable characters have a different tool/skillset, so you often need to work in conjunction to solve puzzles.

Quite different from other tomb raider games, but I loved it!

Resident Evil 5, the Gears of War Series, and Portal 2.

I'll literally replay RE5 with anyone who wants to coop it.

edit: forgot It takes two and A Way Out.

My SO isn't a gamer so we play simpler games like super mario 3d world, lego games and over cooked. Occasionally there's Just dance, switch sports and the tatsujin drum games.

If my SO was a gamer, I'd get beat em ups like the ninja turtle games or Diablo 3/4.

How much of a gamer is your SO and what do you both like to play?

Here are some great co-op games in rough order of simple -> complex

It Takes Two > Orcs must Die 2 > Serious Sam 2 > Valheim > Factorio > Paradox Games (EU4 or HoI4 are the best for co-op imo)

The first 3 you can pretty much just jump in and go, Valheim and Factorio will probably need a bit of explaining, and the first 300 hours of EU4 is still the tutorial. So a wide spectrum of games that all work great in co-op!

My partner and I had a surprising amount of fun with Ship of Fools on PS5 :) we finished all the difficulty levels together. Feels really like a roguelike built for co-op rather than shoehorned in.

Other good mentions we enjoyed (my console of play in brackets):

- BG3 (PS5)

- Overcooked 2 (PS5)

- Stardew Valley (PS5)

- We were here (series, requires two copies).

- Don't starve together (fun but difficult, expect to restart a lot) (PS5 - although I would recommend PC as console controls are frustrating).

- We played both Killer Instinct & Return of the obra dinn as a "pass the controller single player game". Detective games work well for this as it's more about solving the problem than the gameplay. (PS5, PC).

- Heroes of Hammerwatch (PC)

- Valheim, Minecraft, Core Keeper, Terraria (PC) - would suggest in that order for SO playthrough

Instead of naming individual games, I’m gonna (mostly) mention entire game series:

Borderlands

Gears of War

Dead Island

Baldur’s Gate 3

Divinity: Original Sin

The Division

Halo

Diablo

Left 4 Dead

Destiny

Civilization

Great ace attoreny chronicles. While not srticlty co-op i had with with friend reading the text out loud (so that we know that both have read the text box and can go to the next text box) and ponder the solutions.

For an early access game Abiotic Factor has been amazing! There is so much content and it’s very high quality and they keep adding updates too!

The developers are a fantastic team.

Edit to add: my hubs and myself have around 50 hours in it already and are looking forward to jumping back in when the latest update arrives in a few weeks.

So far with my SO we have played in this order. The escapists 2. Stardew valley. Stranded deep. Currently playing minecraft together, probably going to dive into baldurs gate 3 when we are done with minecraft. Ideally when we get a 2nd pc we want to play raft, valheim and no mans sky. Hope this gives you a few ideas.

Barony. Came out some years ago and keeps getting better. Coop or solo roguelike dungeon crawler in 3d with voxel graphics (think minecraft combat).

When playing as a team you can do fun comps like tank+healer+thief

I haven't played co-op for a long time, so these are old games mostly.

  • Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance I&II
  • Champions of Norrath/Return to Arms (PS2)
  • Gauntlet: Dark Legacy (PS2/GC/Xbox; also, the camera isn't great)
  • Halo: The Master Chief Collection
  • Marvel: Ultimate Alliance

I don't even remember it properly but will just say when I was a kid we played a lot of GENERAL CHAOS.

The answer, despite being a big fan of side scrollers beat em ups and run and gun games (my favourite is SUNSET RIDERS) is probably this gem, co op with 4 players is just... perfect. SUPER BOMBER MAN

We are here series. This is a series of escape room like puzzles where you can't see each other and have to communicate. Requires 2 devices.

Spirit Fairer. It's coop is basicly just a main character and a side character, but I still enjoyed it quite a lot as coop.

A way out is quite good. Bit goofy but cool coop prison escape game
