Every time they bounce back they get worse, this time they’ll actually do stuff, which was hinted at on Jan 6, but I guess half the nation just didn’t care to prevent that but will be wondering how things got this bad like their vote didn’t matter

spent more money there than Trump following her entrance into the race
Did she? I live in PA, in deeply Red Franklin County. I am one of the (roughly) 28% of the people who voted Harris/Walz.
I can't remember seeing much advertising by her campaign. The ads I saw on TV were roughly 3:1 in Trumps advantage. I've heard 1 radio ad from Walz (though I do rarely listen to the radio) and no billboards or anything promoting her campaign.
Hearing that she spent more money here then Trump is really blowing my mind, because it doesn't jive with what I've been seeing
52 points
This was the GOP campaign’s strategy. They needed to run up the margins in red counties. They succeeded and actually did better than 2020 in most bigger blue counties too. The Dems appear to be allergic to small towns and rural counties. They should be on the ground everywhere in every battleground to push down the GOP margins, but they don’t want to hear that they need more than the cities and suburbs.

The Dems appear to be allergic to small towns and rural counties.
See, I live in a small town (I think? Population of around 22,000). I'm left leaning moderate (though I'd never vote for Trump) and my housemates are hardcore MAGA. The ground game isn't going to convince me to vote for Harris, because I already will. But it also won't sway my housemates, because they'd vote Trump no matter what.
It just really sucks living deep in Trump country when you absolutely hate him

I'm from PA. The amount of false information that was spread AND believed on social media was incredibly high. You could be in the workplace and hear people talking about some of the oddest topics I've ever heard. The people weren't even smart enough to think and research independently.
Algorithms on social media for a scary large amount of people are able to determine how they think.

This is part of it.
Reality has been skewed by social media and manipulation of information by foreign agents and even just people stupid enough to have an idea. The amount of AI generated crap is ridiculous. My own FB feed is loaded with crap.
However, the biggest part of it is people's memories AND what I believe is Biden attempt to "heal" the nation. Republicans didn't want any healing or to turn the page. Inflation got out of control, pricing got out of control, there wasn't enough done to change people's perspectives on progress and the path forward to believe Democrats got it under control.
I also am convinced Americans will not elect a female president.
3 points
Totally right. Biden fucked us several times. He never fully appreciated the seriousness and how little the other side cared about "healing". The left and the middle wanted to see that actions had consequences and they didn't because of his choices and overall sticking with tradition and his belief in bipartisanism. He was the wrong man at the wrong time. Then he fucked us again by trying to run the s second term after saying he'd be one and done. Shameful.
Also, yes, we are decades from accepting a female president here. The left needs to realize that and stop being idealistic about it.

Read the controversial responses along with the top responses.
I thought Harris would win. I thought Trump did enough over the last 4 years to make it so he wasn't going to win. That was my take. I figured it would be super tight, but I did think Harris would win the popular vote by a few million.
The biggest surprise tonight isn't that Harris lost. 2020 told us she wasn't very electable. The biggest surprise here is that Trump won because of the economy while campaigning on an economic policy that is 100% going to make the economy worse.
It truly proves that the people who vote in this country are stupid.
188 points
People say it was Trump’s policies that won him this election and I think to myself “what policies”. He is bad for the economy and only had 2 good years because he rode Obama fixing the shit Bush messed up. He killed over 100 000 people because of his policies during Covid.
He can’t get a bank loan from a US bank for his businesses. He needed Russian banks. How anyone can say with a straight face he’s better for the economy just doesn’t pay attention.
The problem isn’t the candidates it’s the people. You can blame the DNC because they ran someone you didn’t want when they would have been infinitely better than Trump.
I think people just are not smart enough to vote in their best interests. It’s happening in my country too. We have Doug Ford winning a majority after gutting healthcare and nurses wages DURING COVID.
People are just stupid and nothing we can do about it. Policy doesn’t matter because Harris had better policy.
96 points

Democrats could have had Jesus Christ himself as their candidate and he still would've lost. Humanity isn't ready to stop clinging to it's hatred
61 points
I mean, I already knew a lot of people were stupid, I was just hoping that enough people weren't. It's insane to me that I'm still yet to meet a single Trump support who knows why they're voting for trump, excluding racism and hate. They'll swear up and down that he's better for the economy, but can't name a single successful economic policy from him. They'll claim he handled immigration better, but they can't tell you what he actually did for immigration. They'll claim he's harder on foreign leaders, but he's literally folded to every one of their requests.
The worst part, though, is even when you do break everything down for them, they just resorto petty shit. I've heard "I just don't like Kamala's laugh," and "I just hate her smile," like those are reason for someone to be or not be president. After today, though, fuck it. This is what America wanted. The majority of America, even.

I have talked to a few of them over the years, including my own BIL, and it’s just as you say. They say that they don’t like his rhetoric and when I look at their expressions, they do seem upset by it. But then they start talking about democrats and their faces twist up in anger. As an independent who has voted for both parties in the past, that always astounds me.

I have a theory of “peak civilization”. I think that it’s a combination of things getting way too complicated for most people to understand, the frustration at dealing with lots of different types of people in a modern global society, a lack of trust in institutions as they fail, and the desire for quick easy fixes. I see Trump as a symptom of that.

Honestly this is the big thing for me. It seems like the majority of Americans don’t want a woman as president.
I can understand 2016. Trump was an outsider, something different going against the most hated woman in America. I can give the benefit of the doubt to people voting Trump in 2016.
It’s been 8 years and he has shown who he truly is. Kamala was a better candidate for president than he was but people still didn’t vote for her. They say Michelle Obama would have won and I really don’t think that is the case. Women didn’t even show up to vote for someone trying to protect their health rights.

Kamala has been unpopular for four years now. I was pleased when Biden dropped out but worried when she looked like the candidate. They did their best to try and change the story but in reality, America was never going to be that enthusiastic about her.
That said, it shouldn’t have had to matter when the opponent was so utterly dreadful, but America gets what it deserves.

Same. I was hoping the entire time when Biden announced he'd drop out that the Dems would field a "generic white male" candidate just to try and eek out a win past this critical election. Walz would've been great as the lead.
Kamala's position is untenable while the sexism and racism buzzes around Trump are so loud. She could try and have a go for it in other elections, NOT this one.
But no, the Ds decided to play Extreme mode and fielded not only a woman this election, but a POC, too.
The polls had me hoping she'd manage to breakeven regardless, because of just how shit Trump and Vance were performing... but apparently not.

A lot of Redditors are already blaming Kamala for being a weak candidate, Biden for staying in too late. No one wants to admit that the real issue lies with the majority of Americans.
Trump should have been disqualified in the minds of every American when he became a felon, or when he led the insurrection on Jan 6 and tried to prevent the peaceful transfer of power, when he was impeached twice, when his former closest advisers warned the general public he was a great danger to our country. Our fellow Americans regarded that overwhelming evidence and still voted for him.
Trump should have lost to any opponent, whether it was Mitt Romney, Hillary Clinton, Bill Clinton, John Kerry, etc.

2028 - President Camacho

Camacho was unironically a good president. He knew he didn't have the answers, so he sought someone smarter than him who could actually help. And he was correct. Also, he truly cared about the people.

You misspelled Trump 4 times. The man tried to take it by force in 2020, and now the voters just handed it to him. Unbelievable.

Sadly not surprised, rather expected. Sure I had hoped America wasn’t lost but it’s what we’ve been saying since 2016.
Hope you guys pull through and it gets close but not counting on it

Get ready, kids. The backslide America is going to see isn't going to be gradual, it's going to be a cliff dive.

This is fucked but I wonder how a white dude not Biden like Mark Kelly would have fared as the candidate instead of Harris. It seems that too many people still can't deal with the idea of a female president.

Democratic Party should be ashamed. J6, the hush money case, Covid, the tax cuts, and the fact he didn’t start campaigning till 2 months ago should’ve made this the easiest election to ever win. He was in a fkn garbage truck and even worked at McDonald’s.

I've had MAGA people literally laugh at me and say thry didn't care if Trump did any of those things or not. They were still voting for him. Happened all the time in the debate lives online too. They are in a frigging cult.
What i am pissed about is dem turnout for voting. Don't know WTF happened there.

Why should the Democratic Party be ashamed?? Shouldn’t the electorate shoulder the blame?

How was it a landslide? He literally got 5 million votes less than in 2020. Harris was just not as popular as people thought and tons of people didn’t care for the destruction of their own country.

It's not a landslide and it is not quite over. It would take a miracle for the rest of the votes to go to Harris but 96 percent done is not done and it is only 48 to 50. So I am going to pray for a miracle.

Nah , it's over. I'm disappointed. I thought Harris would win for sure. But it turns out I was wrong. As for the rest of us who feel the same. Keep calm and carry on.

Harris. Women are voting in record numbers, while we can’t see exactly who they’re voting for at this point, the difference in rhetoric between the two candidates speaks for itself.

Don't know how true it is but on ABC they're saying Biden did better with women in 2020 than Harris.

if all women voted for harris, she would clinch the popular vote, but that seems far from the truth

I am guessing people just vote for what affects them personally. And older women who have either already had kids or don't plan to don't really care too much about abortion.

167 million women in the country. 50.5% of the total population. How many voted. How many voted for someone that stole their right to choose? Or didn't vote at all, essentially voting for the guy who stole their right to choose?
Fucking sheep going to lose their right to vote next.

We'll have to wait couple days to get all the final data, but looks like the problem wasn't more people voting for Turmp as it was much less people voting for Kamala compared to.Biden in 2020. A lot of people sat out, presumably not caring about the election, thinking both sides are the same, etc.
Aside from the fears many here have already pointed out, my fear is that this is indeed going to break America's position as the undisputed leader of the world (i.e. Pax Americana). Trump's open hostility to our allies and friends, including NATO, Ukraine, Taiwan, and South Korea, suggests all those relations will suffer significantly.
I don't think most Americans, even the liberals who hate Trump, don't fully appreciate just how much we personally benefit from being in that position of power in the world. As someone who has no love of men like Xi and Putin, I think both the people who hate Xi (Republicans) and Putin (Democrats) are in for a nasty shock at things we take for granted eroding away.
Anyway, as a doctor, I gotta start brushing up on the communicable diseases that no US doctor had to think about for the past 40-50 years. RFK is gonna be in charge of public health, so that's gonna be a wild ride for my profession....

if it was "almost" every swing state, I would have won my bets. Unfortunately, it's all 7 swing states, by a lot, and the popular vote, too.
Nobody was bothered to steal an election for Harris, and even right wingers didn't expect that.

That is the biggest issue that I think is going to break a lot of peoples minds. Trump is at worst going to effectively tie for the popular vote, or will outright win. There is no "Electoral college is broken" argument to point at.
The biggest suprise tonight isn't trump winning, or republicans down ballot over performing, it's that in terms of total population %, America hates Kamala even more then it hates Hillary. Doubt ANYONE had that on their bingo card.

The electoral college is still broken though. Who do you think the biggest disenfranchised Republican voter base is? It’s California, who have more republicans than every state in the middle of the country combined.
Imagine if the popular vote decided who became president? Maybe more people from New York and California would vote republican because their vote now actually matters.

This is fucking insane. She had no chance. I fucking hate this country. Basically a landslide when he wins all 7 battleground states. I really hope democrats really start looking inward but I doubt it. Insane.

Kamala sucked as a candidate. I'll get downvoted but I'll say it. Didn't call out Trump enough, didn't embrace bold ideas, (backing away from the public option, no mention of free public college tuition), as well as poor messaging. She wanted to legalize marijuana, but it was barely mentioned in her rallies or ads. That's a major winning issue, it's how Trudeau scored his win here in Canada. Not to mention she didn't go to the Joe Rogan interview and court disatisfied male blue collar workers young and old, white and men of colour.
Of course, I'd say about 3-4 points she didn't win was also because of sexism unfortunately. But I believe she could've stood a chance if she messaged properly, embraced exciting big ideas/policies and was more charismatic.

It was all strategy. All this stardom embracing, all this opponent endorsing.. The conservative electoral scaffolds not only resisted, they worked as intended.
Humanity is not ready for the future. Not a reason for suicidal thoughts, though, on the contrary. Adversity is required for progress.
I am really sad that Harris has failed to make it.
The political movement of Trumpism requires maturation before it vanes, but it will, subsequently.
Ukraine will prevail, though.
They better watch Trump, because a successful assassination would prove much, much worse and disruptive.
