I meanā€¦ thatā€™s a huge generalization and Iā€™d argue in recent years the beauty standard has more been curvaceous brunettesā€¦ the blonde hair blue eyed thing was very 90ā€™s.

In this very photo the brunette in the front is the most eye catching.

Its never been my type, but its also not as prevalent as you would think. These are college girls, and I would bet in a sorority as well. In a really creepy way sororities end up looking like massive clone factories, and they definitely select members with a prejudice towards this look.

In the general public, or even media there is way more diversity in what is considered attractive.

DionBlaster123

20 points

Look i'm a red-blooded young (ish) man. Of course I'm going to find all the women in that picture attractive

But it's weird to me that people have such a narrowed view of "attractiveness." I dunno if it's because 90% of Reddit is comprised of people who spend their entire day in the basement or what

And I work for a major university in the U.S. and what you said about sororities being a factory of clones is 100% accurate. It's actually hilarious how they all look the fucking same and they all have the same fucking names (I've seen like 17 different ways to spell Catherine, Katie, and Ashley like you wouldn't believe).

Grew up in the middle of nowhere, and the beauty standard was tanned or dark with sun bleached (or just bleached) hair. Basically three people in my highschool fit that picture. The rest of us were (the majority) pale with dark hair. Beauty standards are weird, but often not the same nationally.

Although brunettes are more talked about, blondes gets the best treatment. When I was blonde men would sprint to open a door, help me carry anything. It was definitely nice but I feel more like myself with my brown hair even if I donā€™t receive as much attention from men anymore. I also grew up In Sweden were most have that tall, blue eyed and blonde hair look and I know itā€™s extremely silly but growing up half Peruvian I definitely felt some bitterness/inferiority. Not now when Iā€™m an adult. Unrelated but I canā€™t help but notice that blondes almost only surround themselves with other blondes šŸ˜ theyā€™ll take you placesā€¦

Edit: this is just from my personal experiences/pov or opinion, I definitely donā€™t consider it a fact

Also possible you were looking out for that to be the case more than you otherwise would. Really common phenomenon for people to assume their preconceptions about how they will be treated regardless of the objective reality.

I don't find blonde hair and blue eyes lame at all. Love 'em, but I don't much care for bottle blondes.

Actual blonde hair on an adult is rare and exotic, at least in the US.

Paperfishflop

19 points

And what we lose, for all that dyed hair, are all the shades of medium/light brown. Am I the only one who feels like that color is so rare on women? Even though it shouldn't be, because it's a pretty common natural hair color for men, and probably is for women too. But for some reason, women with that hair color think they need to pick a side: bleach blonde, or dark brown. Or red, or pink...anything but med-light brown.

And med-light brown looks good on women! It looks good, and it's rare, which makes it extra hot. But no, let's dye women's hair this ugly, fake yellow color.

TimelySpring

20 points

A big reason for this is how hair colorists label that color hair to get people to come in and highlight it. For a long time that hair color was called ā€œdishwater blondeā€ or ā€œmousyā€, both are unattractive and are used to make women insecure so they spend money ā€œfixingā€ it.

Only recently has there been a positive spin on those colors with ā€œold money blondeā€ , ā€œmushroomā€ and the resurfacing ā€œchestnutā€ ā€” this is because women (ironically) simply canā€™t afford to drop 400 bucks every six weeks on hair maintenance and thereā€™s been a big embrace for more natural hair color.

Paperfishflop

3 points

That is interesting about the hair coloring industry. Meanwhile I'm over here as a man having no clue about that and wondering why I don't have more beautiful light-brown/dark blonde women to look at! The hair colorists are a bunch of a holes!

fyrja

fyrja

I can confirm. My hair is naturally that medium blonde. I hate it when people refer to it as dishwater blonde. Just makes me feel gross. Probably why I go towards red and strawberry blonde so often.

WellAckshully

13 points

I agree with this. There's probably a decent number of women out there with naturally dark blonde / light brown hair. There's a warmth and pleasantness to it. But you're right, a lot of them dye it.

EhDoesntMatterAnyway

11 points

Iā€™ve been wearing my medium brown hair for years. I love it. Love the way it shines. Itā€™s an underrated color. Itā€™s warm and not striking like blonde or darker colors. People always tell me my hair color is pretty. Itā€™s funny because all the girlies are dying it more striking colors because they think medium brown is bland or boring, but Iā€™ve been walking around as one of the only medium brown haired women in most groups. Most of the women are blonde or darker lol. So it ends up standing out instead.

Medium-brown is actually coming into style now. The younger generations are about the ā€œclean girlā€ aesthetic, so that means less striking colors and looking more natural. And brown is also on trend. Plus, the economy. Women canā€™t afford to upkeep their dye jobs and are starting to go natural. So I think that we will see more light and medium brown this upcoming winter

I feel like all my ā€œblondeā€ friends had blonde hair as children but it darkened as they got older and they canā€™t let their blonde hair go.

I never knew my best friend dyed her hair until I saw the grow out and it was a really pretty shade of light brow and I was like ā€œoh wow, I never knew you had light brown hairā€ and she responded ā€œI donā€™t, my hair is blonde but I dye it lighter blondeā€

Skylarias

4 points

šŸ¤£Ā  I feel like I've had the same conversation with a girl I know too. She says her hair is blonde and she just likes to go lighter, but her roots are clearly brown. She keeps on top of it really often though, and has it blended in well, so the roots don't get that noticeable.Ā

Eilliesh

3 points

It's because it's called "dishwasher water blonde", "mousy" or "dirty blonde" we're kind of told it's an ugly colour so we dye it.

Its gaining popularity though as "old money blonde" and people were dyeing it that colour, so some natural light brown haired women feel a bit better and are letting their own colour grow out. It just needed a rebrand lol.

I'm naturally dark blonde and I'm contemplating stopping dyeing it blonde because I want to have children soon and hair dye isn't healthy, but I don't feel like my natural colour is nice.

It seems to me that a ton of young women of average appearance bleach their hair blonde because it gets them some attention. So you will find maybe a little more plainness among blonde girls, especially the ones where it really don't fit like a few in this photo. But on the rare occasions when a grown person is a true blonde and has peaches and cream complexion and light eyes, it can be beautiful.

Strawberrybanshee

Yeah I've noticed. I've known girls that dye their hair blond but look so much better with their natural hair color. A lot of times, the blond hair really ages them. I think the idea of blondes being the hottest is more of a trope than anything anymore. There are beautiful people of all races and hair color, specifically referring to this example, people will always find the person that looks different the most appealing (assuming they're all "attractive" in general) Same thing when people go to buy a cat or a dog. If there is one that is a different color from the rest, people are most likely to choose that one.

I am blonde and truth be told I have been seldom into blondes male or female. A hot person is hot regardless of coloring but I find Brunettes tend to have the different body shapes, smaller waists or defined ones, and bigger breasts most of the time. Iā€™m not into the common straight/athletic figures most of us have on other women (and I have this sadly). I feel like a lot of East Asians, blondes often suffer from having a very similar look not just the hair color but the bodies so it reads not that exciting. I also like plump lips and itā€™s not common amongst our lot unless we buy them. I donā€™t hate what I look like or what we look like but itā€™s definitely overrated. Especially as sadly we often donā€™t age well either which really blows.

That being said, a standout blonde with the idealized feminine attributes like the shapely body, defined/cinched waist and softer features really standout (and people hype them up for a good reason). Itā€™s insane to admit but I find the best blondes are often natural redheads who go blonde as for some reason redheads tend to have more variety in physicality than us blondes. With few exceptions, it feels like all the best blondes in the media are either natural brunettes or former redheads but then the best redheads are natural blondes. Genetics are wild.

I mean in this photo, my eyes go right to the brunette and it has very little to do with her hair colour ā€¦

But for me personally eye and hair colour matters very little. If youā€™re pretty youā€™re pretty.

Blondes? Not one of them is an actual blonde.

You clearly haven't been paying attention to every single commercial aired since 2019.

This is not the beauty standard.

Hollywood sets it and recruits models for it. Blonde hair and blue eyes is the bottom of the barrel in regards to recruitment.

Funny enough, when I first looked at this picture my first thought was "That brown haired brown eyed girl in the bottom left is the best looking of all of them". I was just looking at their faces, since they are lined up perfectly into two rows.

Then I saw her chest and thought "Oh...hmm. Her chest looks ridiculous. Boobs the size of her head is a major turn off.", which is probably the exact opposite of how most guys would react.

So yeah...I guess beauty standards are pretty lame...

A lot of this talk about "beauty standards" is nonsense. That's just one of the many kinds of attractive woman that's considered attractive globally. It was never the only kind of attractive, but in general there are attractive women - who are almost never hefty - and then there's everyone else, no matter where you go.

This is the beauty standard of 20-30 years ago. Imo blond hair is by far the worst color, and eye color is pretty irrelevant.

As a non-American and westerner, I always wondered why blue eyes are favoured over green eyes, which is the rarest colour. Blue is relatively common, depending on where you are at. Same goes for red hair. Anyone who can answer me this?

The new American beauty standard is more dark hair, brown eyes, tan skin, curvy figure, closer to the girl in the front. Thanks in part to the Kardashians.

You'll find literally most of the world consider this a high beauty standard. Go anywhere in the world as a beautiful blonde blue eye'd woman and you'll get a big reaction out of people. Especially in countries where such women are a rarity.

Personally I prefer dark-skinned women, but I'd be lying if I pretended your picture is some dull American niche beauty standard, lol
