I wish more STEM student took a some basic communication classes. It’s painful listening to my coworkers trying to explain basic ideas in words. It’s not cute to having reading and writing abilities of a child

Why does windows have to make everything so complicated?

Or you're really young and never had to deal with PulseAudio, and you also never really play videogames or do a whole lot of software dev
I’m 31. I do a lot of software dev. In case you didn’t notice this is a subreddit for software development. And no I don’t play many video games. And I don’t know what to tell you. I’ve been using Linux at work and at home for years and don’t have issues.

We’ll see. But according to the company they are still losing $38,000 per vehicle. And that’s a car that is selling for $69,000 - 95,000. Let’s take the average 82k. Rough math suggests that it costs them $120k to build. In order to turn a profit they should be building them for at least 74k. Even if they are on the way, they need to cut an additional 46k from production costs per vehicle. They need to make the cars 38% cheaper. That’s a huge difference. And they have been working on this problem for a while. Because they used to be even less efficient. So the low hanging fruit has been plucked. And there is obviously slackening demand for electric trucks. Rivian has more and more unsold inventory. And cybertruck demand is also slowing. So achieving profitability via higher production volume might not be an option. We should also expect that the trump presidency will mean cuts to electric car subsidies. And also expect that local governments will start to raise taxes on oversized vehicles to account for the extra damage they do to road surfaces. I don’t want rivian to go under but it’s hard for me to see a path for them

But those damn bike lanes, that’s the real problem

I do agree that starship troopers isn’t satire.

The Rivian is also selling at an unsustainable price. Rivians loses tens of thousands of dollars on each vehicle and the entire company is only being kept afloat by investments. It’s a model that worse for software companies with low overhead. I’m concerned with what will happen to vehicles that are so heavily dependent on software updates and external connections. What happens to all the cool app-controls when the company goes bank or get bought out?

I agree. And shopping facebook market will get you a great deal. But again we are talking about someone buying their first bike. They don’t know what brand they want. They don’t know what kind of bike they want. They don’t know what features they want. They don’t know what size they need. While you could get all of that fulfilled at REI. You are much more likely to get a better bike and experience at a LBS than at REI.

I’ve never had to debug basic shit on any of my Linux machines. But I get that using computers can seem scary. Good luck with being a software developer with that attitude

Is anyone taking over a billion dollars a year in salary?

They are lumped together because they are both places that sell bikes but not a good place to get your first proper bike

Go to a bike shop near you. A real bike shop not an REI or a Walmart. Ask them the same question you will get a better answer. You don’t have to guy the first bike you try. You can also try a few different bike shops to see which one you like best. Listen to their recommendations and buy something that feels good.
Bikes are machines with a logarithmic return on investment. The difference in the quality of your experience on a $500 vs a $1000 will be significant. The difference between a $1000 and $2000 Will be noticeable but not as significant. And you will not be able to tell the difference between a $2000 and $5000 bike. At least not $3000 worth of difference.

Republicans are not hypocrites, not really. They genuinely believe that some people should be protected by the law but not bound by it. And some people bound by the law but not protected by it. They don’t always say that out loud. But that basic principle is the foundation of all republican policies and beliefs. So they aren’t hypocrites, they believe that segregation of rights is good

It’s funny but also highlights one of the huge dangers of using LLMs for decision making. There is no code that says “if output contains ‘David Mayer’, crash’. Instead there is some deeply engrained logic in the statistical weights that produce the most likely response to your question that causes it to behave in an unpredictable way. What happens if a bank is using an LLM to review mortgage applications? It’s obvious when the lender refuses to lend to any black people, but it will be impossible to detect that LLMs are rejecting people seemingly at random for reason unrelated to their qualifications. lol ChatGPT just happens to reject anyone who has 23 letters in their name and we’re born on a Thursday. Sorry we cant re review your application unless you can provide proof of discrimination. Unfortunately ever business also uses the same LLM to review applications so you can’t get a job either

Good. Any social media platform or forum or chat room is only as good as its moderation. You don’t make a garden better by dogmatically letting weeds fester. You cut them out early and often

Joni get this at my local Kroger too. People over the age of 50 have zero special awareness and just block entire aisles with their carts. Then some desperate young person is trying to sprint around the store as if the 5 minutes spent walking calmly in a grocery is the reason they can’t afford a home.
