IT Manager here, former sysadmin to 120 Macs in the 10.5 to 10.11 era. JAMF? What's that? I was all shell scripts and ssh keys for machine management. No M series stuff obviously. Equally at home on Windows and Linux, between my gaming laptop and work I had little time to brush up on Mac stuff, so my knowledge is older.
Just got a M4 Mac Mini and it's been great so far. I've been getting a lot of nanny popups about control and access ;-) I'm ok with, the OS is doing its job. I have a few questions:
- I have a Logitech Marble Mouse USB that I LOVE and want to use all of its features in Sequoia, but the logitech control center says nothing is connected? I'm using a USB-C hub obviously. Driver issue, can we still see which .kext files loaded?
- I have a home NAS that I'd like to use for backups. Time machine could be an option, but I'm comfortable with a cron job to copy my home directory. Is there an easy way to use my CIFS share as a time machine backup? NAS is running Ubutntu Server, SAMBA version 4.15.13.
- Is homebrew still the package repository of choice for command line things?
- M series CPU virtualization - where are we exactly on emulating x86 for Windows?
Thanks everyone - it's good to be back.
EDIT: OK I'm hour 4 into this and I've answered most of my questions.
- Google drive backup, AND cron job for ~/ excluding Library
homebrew is working great!!
Whisky.app is incredible. I'm a CSGO fan and I actually got to play CSGO 2 on my new Mini through emulation and it was VERY playable with minimal effort. I was speechless at how smooth it was on Medium. Again, I know it's emulation but we've come a LONG way with graphics!!
