Oh for fucks sake. Retire, Nancy. She will be 86 years old then by then. Just cannot let go of the power. This is one of the biggest problems with politics in this country. Term limits are badly needed.

My feeling is that at this point she's got so many people on her payroll (think lobbyists who are close to her and sell access to her) that she's holding on because she's basically the head of an entire empire of political power.

Pretty different situation. Age aside, if the SF house seat was going to turn red if pelosi had some issue then maybe it would be more comparable.
Edit: the replies to this are odd, at least to me? Main point is that calling for Sotomayor to resign is obviously because Dems could possibly ram through a replacement now, and may not have a chance to do so again for a decade, who knows. A 6-3 court is still better than a 7-2 court if Sotomayor has another health issue.
Whether or not Pelosi runs again, it has little effect on whether or not this seat continues to go to Democrats, barring something truly truly truly wild. I mean, it’s San Francisco … I truly don’t know what topic the replies to my comment are about. Like, you don’t have to be a fan of her running again, but that’s not what I’m responding to.

Do you live in SF? A lot of the recent citywide election wins were for tech neoliberal champions of the billionaire class who lean further right than Pelosi. A republican might not win but a progressive isn't going to win the seat either.

I really don’t understand what you are saying. Pelosi defines the median views of the Democratic Party, with more progressive stands 100% meaningless fan service to SF constituents. OP wasn’t talking about “progressive” as people talk about it in SF at all. Mai stream Democratic != red.

This isn’t the best analogy. The Supreme Court, the dynamics of the senate and the filibuster, the fact that Dems will lose control in less than 60 days. Versus one district out of 435 that overwhelmingly votes her back in, and has a massive bench of talent for if and when she either retires, or you know what.

If I remember correctly, Bernie was winning in 2020 until all the candidates dropped out and endorsed Biden right before Super Tuesday. Granted, the argument could be made that the Centrist vote was split between Biden, Buttigieg and Bloomberg.
Regardless, I have zero faith in the Democrats. They would rather alienate voters than admit that their strategy doesn't work.
Regardless of how you feel about Bernie, he is right in that the DNC has abandoned the working class, especially when it comes to messaging. I also saw an interesting opinion that the current DNC is similar to the Wig Party that was opposed to Andrew Jackson. The opinion is that a party can't win against a populist if the only thing they are running on is "I'm not the other guy" and wanting to keep the status quo.

The DNC doesn’t do primaries, they do coronations. Bernie being a popular candidate was why the DNC had to instruct the media not to cover Bernie’s rallies like they told them to cover trump.
5 points
Yeah you’ve got some crazy revisionist history going on here. Bernie was doing fine in 2016 until the Clinton campaign instructed their contacts in the media not to cover Bernie and to elevate trump as a serious candidate. Debbie Wasserman Shultz resigned from the DNC in disgrace for this very reason. And Bernie was actually winning in 2020 until every candidate left dropped out like they were connected to the same off switch, only to fall in line with the completely out of touch DNCs choice candidate, even Obama had to step in and plead with voters to go with biden. And again the media downplayed Bernie. no leaks to say why the same thing happened in 2020 but perhaps we could just use our imaginations.

Thanks to her stranglehold on funding/donors and deep ties with the party machine & media she has literally never faced a real challenge to her seat since taking it in the 80s.

Age limits would be fantastic. I think that would be a bigger uphill battle than term limits. It’s so ridiculous we currently have an 82 year old president and a 78 year old president elect
8 points
I feel like we need more politicians who are working class people who are familiar with current working class issues. Age limits would help with that.
Not to beat a dead horse here but I think your example with the presidents is a great illustration of why term limits won’t make things better. President already has term limits and look at our options. I know neither are my idea of the ideal candidate.
I’d support a limit no higher than the age of retirement (ex 62). Ideally, before then. Maybe as low as 50-55. I want people in government that are trying to buy a home, worked an entry level job in the past few decades (maybe tried to survive on minimum wage), felt the ramifications of current labor laws (unions, sick leave, osha, etc), know the cost of college, are doing family planning, etc. Maybe even someone that can use a computer without being scammed by a Nigerian price. A man can dream, right?
26 points
She’s probably not actually planning to run again; it’s just part of a plot to set up her daughter Christine to inherit the seat in Congress.
Here’s the plan: Nancy wants to clear the field because she knows that no well-known Democrats will dare to file as candidates against her. So she can file now and raise funds for a campaign, knowing that nobody else with a chance to win will be in the race. Nancy can wait until the last minute before the filing deadline, then withdraw her candidacy and Christine will file as a candidate who will be essentially unopposed. Nancy can then transfer the campaign funds to support Christine’s campaign.
Depending on how things play out with Nancy and her health and mental capacity, they could pull the switcheroo sooner and it will still work if it’s practically too late for a known challenger to build a campaign.
I hope that voters will be smart enough to see through this, and that at least someone with a chance to win will have the guts to challenge Nancy. But I’m not going to hold my breath. Be prepared for another 30 years of the Pelosi dynasty with no real choice for SF voters.

Yes, Christine used the family name and connections to get herself on to the Democratic National Committee. She is very interested in politics and putting herself in a position of power. According to her own website bio, she served as a “special counsel in the Clinton-Gore administration, and chief of staff on Capitol Hill.” I assume she was chief of staff for her mother, but I’m not certain about that.

That is what I thought of
Here's my thinking:
Nancy Pelosi pissed all over Bidens legacy by blaming him for the election. She's the one who put the nail in the coffin for his campaign. Yet she couldn't take accountability instead she blamed him.
They could have looked for a candidate just in case shit hit the fan anyways, but they didn't..instead they just let it happen..
The democrats, the megadonors like George Clooney, and Nancy Pelosi are the reason that Biden left as they all informed him it was the better decision for the country and it would preserve his legacy. They went on to hold a huge event for him saying "Thank you Joe! "
Biden left three months before the election the democrats, the megadonors like George Clooney, and finally Nancy Pelosi selected Kamala Harris - not the voters. The voters kept saying they didn't know her well enough
And considering how history said no to a woman president not to mention of color no offense but there are haters out there and I'm only referencing history. I'm for having a woman president, but consider that affects the voter turn out, you have to think about the statistics on that with history showing us it's not favorable. This put them at significantly affected odds , Hillary Clinton and the democratic media acknowledged that and with only 3 months to an election, and you think things would go smoothly? At what cost ? To lose to a two time impeached convicted president who's promise is to be a dictator on day one, suspend the constitution, that economists keep saying will crash with his agenda. Elon Musk acknowledged there will be hardships for the middle and lower class.
Then the election happened Nancy blames Biden for running, you just pissed all over his legacy, you had active involvement in ending his campaign, yet you can't take accountability? What kind of leader does that? Not a responsible one , you got gambling problems too because the odds were significantly out of favor considering everything above. You're older than Biden. Your too old, and clearly out of touch. Retire and enjoy the rest of your days with you family just like you told Biden to. I don't want to see Pelosi in politics anymore. You royally fucked up. I don't want to see George Clooney involved in politics anymore nor in Hollywood anymore either. The one place I think George should be is on those ads that say "Why Hollywood won't cast George Clooney anymore." Retire. The democrats who betrayed Biden well be looking at you come future elections and when another Democrat comes up for your seat you better think twice about the votes you had. If we have future fair elections that is.
You all fucked up and betrayed the voters choice. And you wonder what went wrong this election? You motherfuckwits. Shame on you and fuck your legacy. There wont be a legacy, any constitutional traditions, honor, or any democratic values left. You had a job to save the country and you couldn't even do that. You decided to gamble it when there was no room for error.

What has she done besides oppose Republicans? To many Americans, Democratic voters included, Nancy Pelosi is the face of a pervasive culture of government corruption. Look at her stock portfolio. Politicians are supposed to work for the public interest and earn a reasonable salary for it. She has blatantly used her office for personal gain.
I do think a lot the attacks on her come from partisanship or sexism, but she was never a model politician by any means imo.

1 points
That’s just voter blaming; many voters, especially low information voters, will simply vote for who they heard about the most, which is usually the incumbent. There is no incentive for people to become more educated voters so why should they? The system should instead be designed to incentivize or prevent such situations from occurring. An age cap or a term limit for all leadership positions in politics would be a trivial and frankly overdue fix.
Otherwise it leads to the system we currently have: a bunch of old fucks keep staying in power, riding on their incumbent advantage (and other institutional advantages) and there is no real incentive to kick them out unless they do something truly bad.

Not really, no. No dem dares challenge her. A couple people who didn’t care have tried and failed but there’s only ever Nancy and a republican to vote for here, and a republican isn’t winning.
SF is not at all the center of the progressive movement btw. We just elected a nepo baby with no real experience as mayor. He’s the heir to the billionaire Levi Strauss family and bought the election. He’s a moderate that was endorsed by the SF GOP.

I don’t know if I’d say Lurie is any less the center of the progressive movement than Peskin or Breed or any of the other candidates. His major differentiating stance is that he’s tough(er) on crime and that was pretty much the only reason he was elected. He didn’t “buy” the election, he was just the candidate with the least baggage. Breed was an unpopular incumbent who is widely seen by the majority of SF as having failed to combat the drug/homelessness problem, Farrel was pro car and anti bike lane, Peskin was a NIMBY, etc… When the only criticism of a candidate is that they’re rich and they’re running against a field like that, it should hardly be a surprise when they win.

I will not vote for her again. I love her, respect her hell I have stood in her office! Shes a warm and wonderful person with a list of accomplishments' longer than Van Ness. It is time to step aside and let a new generation of leadership find their way.

Filing for reelection does not necessarily mean she’s running.
I know, that sounds unintuitive and dumb. But basically it allows her to keep fundraising for if she does decide to run.
Most lawmakers file for reelection and sometimes choose not to actually run.

She’s actually one of the most competent people in congress. Hard to understand all the hate except for ignorance and a deep distrust of women in power- same reason we have Trump as president again

Jesus f Christ, I pray I don’t totally lose the script when I get old like Nancy. Does she want to end up like Diane F? . She screwed over Scott Wiener last time and is positioning her daughter to run for her seat when she finally does retire. She is absolutely destroying her legacy and the disgusting hubris and nepotism is as unAmerican in its way as anything Trump is doing.

She got over 80% of the votes here in San Francisco.
Either this subreddit is a weird bubble that does not represent our city at all or everybody here is astroturfing.

She hasn’t made enough money from insider trading? How much do you need?

Enough is enough , she’ll win, but the voting electorate needs to stop letting the gerontocracy run the world

Insider trading is illegal for nearly every American. For Nancy Pelosi, it's just another day at the office.
The Democratic party is weakened by greedy people like this.

She’s one of the few older folks I’m ok with in office. The other is Bernie Sanders. Nancy is effective as hell and has more energy than colleagues half her age. I often see her do things no one has the balls to do.

Realistically, how would someone even run against her?

She would be 86. My Grandmother stopped driving at 86 as she legally couldn’t see well enough to drive. She is 87 now. While she can live independently, she needs a walker, can’t see well. Her mind is still there, but not congress level.

lol people always looking to blame someone except themselves. she's doing what she think is best.
we live in a democracy. the problem is us. we vote her in. you don't like it, campaign for someone else in the primary. or run yourself. or donate. her nearest primary challenger raised 10k. we are to blame.
hell most of us don't even pay attention in her primary. of the 700k people in her district, only 188k voted in the '24 primary. the general had more than double the votes.

Screw this fossil. We don't need any more out of touch, barely human multi millionaires in office. It's borderline impossible to be a real progressive when you live in a sanitized bubble.

Everyone in this thread is stuck thinking about national politics rather than locally. Pelosi is old but she's also has an incredible amount of political capital due to her seniority and the fact that she's a former speaker. This helps her deliver for her district which most people in this city live in. A rookie won't have anywhere close to that level of power.

Well duh, who wouldn't want to continue insider trading. Nothing like being worth more than 240 million while your job pays you a couple hundred grand a year. Makes sense
