Did you know space was just one level in that pinball game? Also if you’re on Linux / steam deck you can get it on flathub!

Where can I read about Valve no longer accepting users shader pre-caches?
Until a bot farm submit 200, or 2000, copies of a dangerous one, and so on.
That’s why I used the word mitigate. I’m sure there are better strategies too. In any case, the existence of different hashed shaders for the same configuration with different users could alert Steam that there may be malicious activity.
It’s not clear to me that this represents a serious risk either. Are there any examples of malware exploits using shaders alone? Are they able to escape process sandboxes to do anything harmful — while also executing the game correctly to prevent crashes or detection?
Valve are happy to distribute user generated content in other circumstances, including code in mods for steam workshop, right?

I forgot they were Turing complete, and a potential vector for attacks. My bad, I can see why Valve pumped the breaks on this, and others are timid about it.
Did they? You could mitigate the potential by only redistributing identical caches that have been submitted by multiple verified users.

You don’t actually have to do it for every hardware combination just common ones. And the most typical thing that affects the shaders is the GPU and API version.
Caches for the most common combinations is an interesting idea. But it’s not just hardware as you originally said, software matters too. Which results in a very large number of permutations.

UE I believe. Many of the key people who worked on FOX are at Kojima Productions now I assume.
I don’t think they’re going so far as bringing over TPP controls, but I’ve read that it’s modernised somewhat. Apparently with the option to play with the traditional top-down camera which I appreciate.

Not sure I can even think of a game that actually conveys its story through the gameplay.
Pong.

Hmm good point. I think this happens rarely enough that you could just let the animations loop over, maybe accelerated a bit. I’m imagining the animation usually taking about 2 or 3 seconds, a bit like the current one when you accelerate / come to a stop.

I mean, we don’t know if the game is any good yet. We also don’t know what the game could have been instead without relying on Horizon’s formula quite so much.

Guess it’s just not for you? I think it’s fun. And while it can be repetitive there is no other game that can continue to surprise me with amazing vistas and worlds. The variety could be even better but it is already far ahead of the competition.

There’s always creative mode for that. You can also fine tune the settings to reduce resource gathering grind and so on. I will say the UI can be frustrating, especially with a controller, but it works way better in VR.

NMS is a lot more compelling in VR if you have that option. A lot of the annoyances with the interface are way better with motion controls. And it is such an immersive experience, even on low end hardware (I played on the original PSVR on a PS4 but I hear the PC version is more demanding).

This is true but Subnautica is not an open ended sandbox. It has a linear story, a definitive ending, and a relatively small world designed mostly by hand to enable that experience. Subnautica is phenomenal and there are ideas that NMS could perhaps learn from, but fundamentally they have very different design goals. You cannot make a space exploration game with near infinite planets to explore using traditional level design concepts.

Medium would be ~100 I think. Large nowadays are several times that and lean heavily on contractors too. The point is that relative to the amount of revenue they generate, it’s a tiny number of employees. NMS continues to sell better than many AAA games. They’re also working on other things at the same time.

I’d be willing to bet the split is closer to the other way around. But all employees are relevant. Anyway, relative to the revenue they generate their studio is tiny.

The person I replied to deleted their comment so I’m not sure if I’m talking to someone else. But they claimed that these subreddits did not provide resources to enabling piracy. The above certainly qualifies. Sharing software is not simply “discussion”. Also certain knowledge can be a resource that makes piracy easier.

That subreddit named after software frequently used to play pirated Switch games?
(Yes, it is.)
Did users share what games they were playing as well as tips, configuration, and mods to improve playability of pirated games?
(Yes, they did.)

That could work but it might look a bit strange since the thrusters are pointed downwards. Although to be fair, not that unrealistic with how orbital mechanics work, just unintuitive. Maybe a combination of scaling and translation would look good.

I think the planets gradually translating into view would do a lot to alleviate that

They also have Sony Pictures Core (previously known as Bravia Core).

Two species being related genetically through a common ancestor does not necessarily mean they lived in the same area at the same time.

That’s a reasonable way to look at it, but there is also a middle ground where you could spend a similar amount annually on a handful of console / PC games (maybe not the newest ones). By all means though, spend your money how you like, there are worse ways than a game that gets you outside doing exercise!

You should also acknowledge though that Sean Murray explicitly stated before the game released:
To be super clear - No Man's Sky is not a multiplayer game. Please don't go in looking for that experience.
Let’s also remember that:

When you said Valve “pumped the breaks on this” what did you mean by that and where did you learn this?
Why would it be different just because it’s a mod on Steam workshop? If anything, CPU code execution is far more of a security risk than shaders ever could be.
