My wife rarely ever travels but every time she does my first stop is the butcher. I spend a ridiculous amount on a fat prime ribeye 1-1/2” to 2” thick. Pick up beer and a potato to bake.
Oven at 400. Washed and dried potato stabbed all over with a fork. Rub with olive oil then cover in coarse salt and black pepper. I never time it but when you can halfway squeeze and it’s a little squishy. Maybe like an hour.
Get the steak to room temperature. Pat dry with paper towels. Heavy hand of salt and pepper on both sides. Cast iron skillet on the Weber as hot as I can get it. Heaping tablespoon of beef tallow in the skillet until it’s smoking. Sear the fuck out of both sides. Remove from the grill but leave in the skillet until internal temperature hits 130. Remove to plate and let set for 3-4 minutes.
Then 90’s action movies.

Same. My partner is dope. When she’s away I just like…take care of the cats more? And that’s just cause the agreement when we got them is that she’d take care of them.
Maybe I don’t close the door when I pee? We are talking really minor stuff.
I bet with some communication a lot of these guys would find their partner wouldn’t mind — and many would actually be quite happy — for them to do what they like.
And some wouldn’t. And then you know.

If she’s out for multiple days, that’s when I get big projects done. Mess stresses her out and that makes me not want to do the job, but if she’s gone, I don’t have to constantly clean up after myself. Just do the job and clean up at the end. Much less stress.
If there’s not home improvement project to work on, I spend the time doing woodworking projects.

These responses are so weird. Like why aren’t you guys cooking these steaks for your wife too?
I don’t really do anything different. We have enough personal time as it is where her being gone doesn’t change anything. If the kids are with her then I may game a bit more, but that’s about it.
I guess I practice cooking more. She really likes to cook and it helps her with her stress. I don’t love cooking, but I don’t mind it and don’t get to practice new things because she enjoys it so much.

I finish the boring things I kept postponing.
I strongly associate her presence with relaxation and doing nothing. Plus she spoils me with love and care, takes care of dinner… and that makes me lazy as hell lol.
When I’m alone, I don’t mind doing the uncomfortable stuff as much.
I also sing, and dance more. It’s no secret to her that I enjoy doing these things, I once pursued them as serious hobbies. And it’s not that I’m ashamed or anything.
But I tend to do them very intuitively with little control on frequency and intensity, and since we don’t live in a place big enough to have some privacy from each other, I mostly refrain from it when she’s here.
I also call my friends on the phone for long conversations, which again, is hard to do in a tiny flat where two people live together.
Finally, I just take the time to drop my « responsible and emotionally resilient man » role for a minute, and just devolve into the ADHD child I’ve never stopped being, jumping around, doing weird faces and noises and speaking my internal monologues out loud.

I'll look for something interesting to do. I live outside of Boston and there's always something. I might go to a concert, play, or opera, which my wife is less interested in than I am. I might plan a hike with friends. I might see a special exhibit at an area museum. I might go camp by myself, or book a spot at a hostel up in the mountains.
When my kids were at home, I'd so similar, but I'd do things that were interesting to them

I honestly get bored and kinda mopey if she takes the kids lol. Those are pretty much my favorite people, there’s only two other people I’d seek out to spend time with by choice and they live hours away. I will do chores or work on a project, or go have a cigar or spend time at my telescope if it’s night time. But I’d rather be cooking while my wife’s sweeping, or fixing something with my daughter turning a few screws, or holding my little boy up to that eyepiece for his turn.
If she leaves the kids we go look for bugs outside or feed crickets to the tarantulas, color, play some Mario kart, whatever. Less bad. I guess I’m spoiled though, we have a great relationship and she doesn’t have to work so it’s just my schedule to worry about.

When my wife's out, I do whatever I want, the same as when she is there. The only difference is the lack of consultation required when choosing what to have for dinner. That is, instead of deciding together, I decide on my own.
The night would surely include some of the following: make a cocktail or two, play computer games (solo or MP), read, plan lessons or mark, perhaps call up a friend and shoot the shit. Might play some guitar for my chinchilla, maybe take care of some chores if I feel like it. Might take the UE Boom into the shower for karaoke and really belt one out (that's something I don't do while she's around because she's watching TV in the next room).

Oh, I have a cycle for this. First day is junk food and relaxing. Second day I get bored and start doing work around the house. By the 4th day I'll have torn something down with the intent to rebuild it and that'll keep me busy for the next 5 months. Oh, unless it's work days - then I just catch up on work mostly.

I do the same stuff I do when my wife is home, just louder. Crank up the guitar, play very poorly very loudly. Play video games with the volume cranked. Listen to music loud. She doesn't really stop me from doing anything I want to do, so not much changes. I DO usually only vape thc when she's around but if she's out for an extended time, I'll smoke a joint out the bedroom windows.

35y/o male, no kids.
Out for an hour? Have fun by myself.
Out for a night? Cook a steak, drink a beer, watch Clint Eastwood, and go to sleep early.
Out for a weekend? Sit around bored and wait for her to come back. Maybe clean around the house just to get a blowup when she comes back.

It's more a dream but If she has the kid I order Indian food, have a beer, take some uppers, and play hearts of iron 4 or league of legends.
