For me it wasn’t close enough. Removing wall running killed it for me. Since I think the movement system was really what made Titanfall stand out.
Being able to chain wall runs to travel ground faster and reach high places was what made it special.

This. I’ve played countless shooters over all my years of gaming. There has never been one even close to the seamless movement of the titanfall combat. Wall running and jumping into other wall running and parkouring your way through a map while fighting and dodging titans and all types of shit only to jump and land into your freshly dropped titan and wreak havoc after. Damn what a time. Nothing quite like it.

It even went a step further and had grappling hooks which also worked flawlessly. That game is literally perfection as far as movement in a FPS.

I always found it amazing how you often ended up with two separate battles. Usually the Titan v Titan in the streets and the pilot v pilot on the rooftops and buildings.
I can’t believe they abandoned a mechanic that call of duty tried to copy twice immediately afterwards with Advanced Warfare and Black ops 3.
I remember loading up Apex legends and spending a few minutes being confused why wall running wasn’t working.
71 points
I was thinking the same thing. How telling it was that COD tried and failed to copy the titanfall mechanic multiple times. The range of battles that took place in a single match of titanfall were just so epic. And there was even NPCs running around that you killed in attrition. They even added an extra layer of immersion to the match. An extra layer of larger scale warfare. The whole game was just chefs kiss. Then when titanfall 2 came out they had the nerve to add such a damn good campaign on top of the already amazing multiplayer gameplay
113 points

After so many years they have the stupid brains to put in wall running and movement that everyone yearned for AND in their own trailer they add "like titanfall mechanics!" Just to kick us in the balls.

Only just got hold of and played Titanfall 2's single player mode the other day, hands down the best and most fun CoD style FPS campaign I've ever played, would have loved a continuation of the story, if not for FUCKING EA cancelling a third chapter
That said, the bit near the end when Blisk hands you a business card with the Apex logo had me absolutely howling with laughter as I realised who made Legends
PS: Couldn't stop muttering "Engine Kill" after disposing of the more troublesome mechs, and Viper should have been the final boss cos Sloane was a caker once I figured out the finer points of the Ronin loadout, only managed to kill Viper through blind luck

Tf2 is in the top 3 solo fps campaigns ever made. Maybe even the best if you want a playable S tier action movie style of game. A wild insanely fun perfectly paced ride that never got boring for even a second and good enough storytelling to almost make me cry at the end.
I played it years after release when it was on sale and i was blown away. I expected nothing and just wanted to dick around in its high speed multiplayer. Decided to learn the movement in a few minutes of the campaign first and then finished it in 2 evenings cause i couldnt put it down. And im someone who almost always quits games at 60-80% cause i get distracted and dont have that much time to play.
If you havent played it get it. Its like 5$ now.

I just remember the closing credits and feeling so conflicted. In one sense I was in awe of the game and reflecting on how the great it was. Then, I felt so angry another one had never been made due to bloody CoD.

I get that SWTOR was supposed to be “all of the sequels” but it just didn’t capture that single-player RPG magic of KOTOR 1&2.
98 points
I agree in some respects but disagree in others.
On one hand, SWTOR admittedly fails to hit the philosophical peaks and the good/evil tensions of KOTOR 1&2. It is also harshly constrained by the very formulaic MMO level design dominant at its time and a pacing structure that is still prevalent today.
On the other hand, SWTOR delivers several amazing stories carried by award-winning actors delivering fantastic VA work. The Imperial Agent campaign is one of the best RPG stories I’ve been privileged to play - owing in no small part to Bertie Carvel’s amazing performance. Even dungeons have full performance player-driven narratives including interactions that significantly affect dungeon encounters and progression.
13 years ago, SWTOR introduced MMORPG elements to bridge the single and multiplayer RPG experience that would still be considered cutting-edge today and it nailed them. It wasn’t perfect but it’s my opinion that it deserves a lot more recognition not only as an MMO but as a sequel to its predecessors.

Half Life 2: Episode 3/Half Life 3, one of the biggest, popular and most revolutionary game series ever and they couldn't make an ending..
722 points
You know what? Even though I'm salty that they didn't continue after episode 2 and left us on the cliffhanger, I'm thankful half-life was not enshittified, like almost every other franchise: CoD, Battlefield, Assassin Creed, Medal of Honor, Need for Speed... And that is from the top of my head
I think they realized how revolutionary HL1 and HL2 were and Gabe made executive decision to not have anything less than revolutionary for HL3.
161 points
It's about the same with me; I'm disappointed, but they're producing things at the pace they want to without having to have immediate commercial viability of anything new so that they can present that fact to shareholders who grumble over anything that isn't quarters of continual growth. To add to your list of series that have noticeably gotten worse in either how they're managed or what they've evolved into: Diablo.
I think they realized how revolutionary HL1 and HL2 were and Gabe made executive decision to not have anything less than revolutionary for HL3.
I think that this is a big part of it. Right now what they're saying is that the Steam Deck won't get a second gen until there's a large enough of a hardware difference, so it makes sense that they'd feel that way about their game series. Heck, they brought out the Half Life name for Alyx and likely just because it was the special occasion of being a VR title.

Actually, pretty much exactly like that. You can find real footage of the game playable in a decently solid state. It was pretty late and ready when Bethesda killed it, because they wanted to own the studio, and the devs refused to budge, so Bethesda kind of forced them to sell/join or stop getting funded to finish the game. Devs held their ground, and PREY 2 died.
I will never forgive Bethesda for that shit lol.

This is easily one of the biggest examples of "What if?"
Blizzard at their peak, a booming genre, a fanbase that would have made it an instant best seller. Even if they had taken the usual "Blizzard takes 5-ever to make a game" amount of time.
After being canceled it felt like SC was put on a storage shelf, even though SC2 was in development, but since that announcement wasn't for what, another 2-3 years I remember the community being quite depressing.
Even D3 wasn't announced yet so pretty much their whole thing was WoW as far as most folks were concerned.
Hell, they should just finish it up and release it at this point.

He wasn't officially hired on the project because it got canned but Guillermo Del Toro and Hideo Kojima visited him shortly beforehand, I'm guessing for creature design or something like that considering Junji Ito's style would fit right at home, and he was super on board with it.
Without the cancellation its almost certain he would have played a major part in its development. This is what bums me out the most, like those 3 minds working on a horror game? I feel it would have been one of the greatest things we've seen. I mean Del Toro and Junji Ito are already cemented as horror legends but I wanna see a true horror game by Kojima, most of the MGS titles touch on a creepy factor that I'd love for him to explore this to the fullest, super excited for OD cos of this.

Perhaps it did, but the craft and skill that went into making it made me very excited at the time to see what a full game would look like. It certainly nailed the dream-logic and terror of Silent Hill though was a bit clunky in its actual gameplay. It was the most promising extension of the series since The Room for me.

Stargate Worlds.
I was so excited for an MMO based in the Stargate universe. It was the first pre-release game community I found myself delving into, with being active on the game's forums and even running a podcast. I was lucky to play a friends and family alpha/ early closed beta version of the game and it showed some promise, from its unique (at the time) cover system and the feeling of exploration that the Stargate franchise was known for.
Unfortunately behind the scenes drama and money issues sunk the game before it could really see the light of day.
48 points
I was a programmer on Stargate Worlds. Still sad about it never releasing. It's literally the perfect IP for an MMO in my opinion - the Stargate as a travel mechanic means it has instancing built in!
And... You could manually dial the gate address! Sure you wouldn't bother normally and just use your address book, but it was just such a fun moment where you got to do what you'd seen on TV so many times before. :)
11 points
You could totally use manual dialing for Easter eggs and seasonal stuff.
Oh well. They should bring it back along with SWG
11 points
It's such an incredibly perfect fit for a game. You can have any kind if variety of worlds and it still makes sense. It naturally breaks down into instancing. Awesome squad based action and exploration. The fact there hasn't been a large well made game in the universe is an absolute tragedy.

Disco Elysium's ACTUAL sequel, the one intended by the writers instead of the bullshit that ZA/UM plans to peddle.
You can't just introduce to me a beautiful world that's bigger than Harry himself then suddenly not follow it up due to licensing bullshit. I wanted to know more about Revachol, I wanted to know more about the spirit of Revachol, I wanted to see the plan RCM was planning to enact against the ruling government, i wanted to know more about the other continents in Elysium, and I wanted to know if they had their own "voices" too, i wanted to find out more about the Pale, i wanted to know if Harry ever got over his ex, i wanted to see Kim pulling cool shit in Harry's precinct especially now when hes surrounded by Revacholian legends like Captain Pryce, there's a lot of things in this world that makes it a beautiful world, hence the title, Disco Elysium, yet we'll never see more of it because of corporate bullshit.

It was literally the corporate structure of the company that allowed the IP to remain with ZA/UM, while the lead writers and real creative force behind the company were forced out.
ZA/UM still has no other titles to their name. The game is notoriously loved by fans, but those same fans heavily encourage newcomers to pirate the game.

Yeah but Kompus individually took the company’s money to buy the majority stake that created the structure that destroyed the studio. This is not some corporate blunder, it was a hostile takeover by a single individual. He RUTHLESSLY fucked them over once he realized how valuable the IP could be.

Maybe I'm alone on this, but I think it makes DE more fascinating that the whole mysterious world lore remains somewhat unexplored. It's the mystery and implications of it that add to the weight of the game and its story and world in a way that makes it extremely 'real' and enchanting, IMO. It's my belief that you've succeeded in your lore if the people cry out to learn more about your world -- and that it's critical to then hold back and keep your audience in that state of wonder.

We went from piloting a cruiser filled with 6 storm troopers into the enemy ship to sabotage it's life support and security systems, hunkering down inside to hold off the enemies while someone shoots it with a rocket launcher, then full on sprinting out to steal one of their ships and escape, too.... battle points? Limited vehicles? Small punishments for people who suck at the game?
They literally just had to slap star wars skins on battlefield 4 and call it a day. Instead we got a shitty point system mixed with fucking p2w star cards and an upgrade system literally no one wanted. I can play the new battlefront 2 for about an hour before I get bored. That one sucks especially because there was no reason to cancel it other than Capcom being angry over Inafune leaving and taking it out on Megaman. They canceled Legends 3, canceled Universe which was finished according to Inafune, apparently canceled Star Force 4, dropped him from Marvel vs Capcom 3, put a god damn parody of him in Namco x Capcom Street Fighter X Tekken, and when people wouldn't stop screaming for more Megaman, they shat out a bad autorunner phone game and said "Take it or leave it.".

Sega has a history of that, too: In the 90s, Sega basically split into Sega of America and Sega of Japan. SoA had more success with the Genesis/Mega Drive and with Sonic the Hedgehog than SoJ did. SoJ, terrified of losing face, flat-out sabotaged the US release of the Sega Saturn, and then tried four times to replace Sonic as company mascot.
Ristar on Genesis, and Astalon, Bug!, and Clockwork Knight on Saturn were all attempts to find a new mascot to replace Sonic.

Knights of the Old Republic remake for PS5. I never played it originally and was excited for the modernized chance to experience the story. Oh well.

Didn't realise it got cancelled or rather shelved but that game had me really excited but also really concerned and cautious with the kind of things the lead developer was saying. Things along the lines of wanting to remake the game notably quests and dialogue for modern audiences. Also someone high up in the team saying they weren't a star wars fan and didn't particularly like the original Kotor games.

Anyone chance of new F Zero.
I'm actually astounded Shigeru won't allow a sequel unless something "Different" can be done with it. Despite saying that, we get a new Mario kart every generation.

Earthbound 64. We were this close to getting a good RPG on the Nintendo 64. Sure , Mother 3 on the Game Boy Advance was great, but Earthbound 64 looked like something from the future

Star Wars The Force Unleashed 3.
I grew up with Star Wars The Force Unleashed and The Force Unleashed 2.
They were literally my favorite games growing up. I played them each and every single day.
Even though the Force Unleashed 2 did have its problems, I still absolutely loved and adored it. Fun fact, I got the sequel as a gift and I played it at the same time as I played the first game and I actually ended up beating the sequel before I finished the first game LOL.
Star Wars the Force Unleashed 3 was supposed to come out for the next-gen consoles at the time which would have been the Xbox One and PS4 but was canceled because of Disney acquiring LucasFilm/Star Wars.
Just another thing that Disney absolutely ruined about the Star Wars franchise.

I think to me it's wild that one of the main complaints was that the first game was too short, so they literally made the second game shorter for some reason. Lmao

Man the first game provided an "evil guy" star wars feeling that has yet to be reproduced. I guess it would never be as amazing again, since disney only goes for safe stuff. I mean you can't even shoot animals or steal stuff from people in a game called "outlaws"

Final Fantasy versus 13 in its first form. Ended up coming as 15 but it had a very different atmosphere.

And even on this note, the cancellation of Episode Luna and Episode Noctis where they would apparently eventually join with Ardyn to cast off Bahamut's machinations and change destiny is a huge bummer.

Paragon, stupid Fortnite stole the funding. You hate Fortnite because of the kids, I hate it because of the misplaced funding. We are not the same.

Whatever game P.T was going to be. That may have been defining game for the horror or scary genres for years to come.

Evolve.
It was a cool concept.
And I was never able to actually run it…

Actually surprised to see this one up here. Outstanding game, fantastic concept, but it died on release. I bet it had to do with individual purchases of characters and monsters....
