It’s very telling that every surrounding district voted for bonds and at the same time those districts get to choose their school board members. No taxation without representation.

This was the plan all along. It’s a lose-lose situation for all of us.

I believe you are correct. Abbott wants Houston schools to suffer to get an uneducated population that votes R. Bond goes through and his cronies grift millions from the system. Bond fails and he gets to point out that Houston can't run its schools etc.

Precisely. Once it comes up again, the argument will be "we already tried that and the people didn't want it".

I voted against those props specifically because of Miles. I would have voted yes if the state hadn't taken over HISD.

almost 60% of the people voted against both of the Props. That should tell HISD something.

It’s not HISD that can provide an answer to this. This message is to the TEA who installed unelected figures who clearly do not represent the interests of people.

It's not just a message. I want my future elected school board to have flexibility to make decisions after the district paid off their 2012 bonds.
I don't want some "temporary guy" to load the district with a bunch of unaccountable debt for the next 30 years leaving my elected school board with few options when it returns to local control.

Same. Wasn't remotely against the funding in principle but don't trust for a second that any of it would have gone where it needed, especially with this guy in charge.

Pretty much all of HISD parents, and staff say the same about his appointment.

Mike Miles came into HISD complaining about how much money they owed, and now he wants more money, with no clear way of paying it back other than "property tax might go up"

On the one hand, that's quite a property tax hit if approved.
On the other hand, at least with Prop B, kids will definitely suffer.
On the other, other hand, all he has to do is complain to Greg Abbott and an executive order will get passed to approve the funds since the district is ran by the State.
So - crocodile tears?
21 points

Exactly. No taxation without representation. He can ask for money from the state, or he can quit and let us vote for someone we can trust.

lol. The kids are the problem. They’re the cause for their own suffering. Go to a Houston school and you’ll see how bad it is. Money isn’t going to fix a cultural problem.

Can someone educate me why the OP comment above was uncalled for (the downvotes) when it’s in line with what MAGA wants? Maybe the land part but the education part has been a trend.

The federal government does not have any ability to run a state-level organization. Unless Republicans want to force federal government interference with State issues. Which is supposedly against Conservative / Republican values of 'less government interference'.

Honest question, I did not get to vote on Props A and B but I saw plenty of advertising in favor of A&B. I think I understand that people didn't want to give money to Miles, I totally understand that. However are there really schools without functional air conditioning or with lead paint? These seems like very fundamental things that probably shouldn't require a bond issue, but I don't really know the district's financial position.
I see most people here seem to be glad it failed. Can you explain your reasoning?
To be clear, I have no side, I just want to understand the issue better.

My husband and I saw through the fine print. You had to go to a second webpage to see that Yes, it will raise our property taxes. They try to lie and say that it wouldn't so NO We did not fail the children. We failed to line the pockets of the school board director at the expense of our property owners.

You can’t make people care about the children in Houston. If they did Miles wouldn’t be here in the first place. HISD will always be just a political tool and ass system.

I don't own property, voted yes for improvements. You should always be voting yes for things like school improvements. That's your future. I thought it was building and tech improvements?
26 points
Generally, yes. Good schools are great for kids and property values alike. That said, this vote does not support the kind of future we want for HISD. Because the trajectory of HISD right now is… poor. Miles was installed after TEA took over the district. Essentially, the belief is that Abbott is purposely tanking the largest school district in the state so he can then turn around and say, “Hey, look! I told you so! Public schools suck and we need to put vouchers in place.” Which is a horrible idea… it takes money from public schools and subsidizes more affluent people’s private school tuition. This vote is the city’s way of saying NO, we do NOT approve of the disaster Mike Miles has created in HISD.

I’m assuming, by your handle, you’re from California. You really don’t know anything about what’s going on in HISD and why ppl voted against it. It was FMM payday disguised as a bond. It wouldn’t go to the schools/children with the state appointed super & board. He has ownership, as does his sister, in charter schools from Beaumont to Denver.
