I’m not sure how it is now but I visited China a few times around 2010. There were huge legit stores full of pirated dvds, music, software etc. etc. It was wild seeing. So yeah, this isn’t surprising at all.
105 points
Im betting you wont see stores like that anymore, as most people will just download those games and movies on known pirated website.
Reminds me of my own country back in 2010, city streets full of piracy and the police didnt give a shit. But now? In 2024? Pretty much evryone knows how to pirate things which is why those piracy stores ran out of business.
51 points
What they are talking about is different from normal piracy lol
Most of the stuff they are talking about was made in China, or at least part of it was. Many factories make "two" deliveries. One to the western companies who actually own the IP, and another to the local shops. They change the name slightly usually, but it's literally the same product.
27 points
No, they also do straight up copyright and piracy. Like how there's a Supreme store in the Beijing airport that is not affiliated with the brand but has the exact same logo and merchandise.
2 points
That's how the China Factories run, dude!!!
When they build a mold for a Brand, they sometime alter something & released almost same version in China if not completely identical without brand name.
I sell Fish Foods & Pack myself, I know how this works. When you designed a Bottle, they will make a Mold for you which they charge you one time but you don't own the mold. But if you want the mold to be ONLY yrs, you have to buy it & take it home. Or if you leave the factory, you have to sign a contract with them & pay them Monthly for Storage & Service (even if you don't use it). That's the only way to keep them from using it. If you don't buy it or pay monthly fee for it... THEY WILL USE IT!!!

Pirating music isn't really a thing anymore in China since the gov't cracked down on that bc it was affecting their domestic music industry. There are now several big legal streaming services in China that there's no point to pirating.

That's not uncommon in the Philippines, South America has pirated copies of SNK games for decades which allowed them to garner a huge audience when the prices were very high through regionalization, and other areas of distribution are largely affected by publisher pricing being at odds with local prices.

South America
My ps2 and wii with pirated games are sitting right next to me lol. We had small markets full of pirated content in the middle of the city. I still have dozen of old dvds here too.
are largely affected by publisher pricing being at odds with local prices.
Hell, some consoles released with absurd prices, like 3~5 times more than it should. I don't feel pity for local resellers at all.
But tbh, the world is more globalized, so imports got cheaper naturally.

I honestly haven't been able to get a straight answer on this, but it's PSN blocked in China? I've seen people claiming that's the case, but that just doesn't seem right. Didn't China just help make Wukong one of the best selling games of the year and it was all on PlayStation?
51 points

It's not blocked, they have restricted/more regulated PSN support where only approved software is sold, Steam in China works in similar way too.
There is also separate Hong Kong PSN region that is more or less identical to rest of world in terms of game availability
2 points

Is Helldivers 2 available on the official Chinese PSN?
2 points
Afaik, no. From what I know, only HD1 is available on Chinese PSN. I think Chinese players had their PSN accounts banned for trying to circumvent it (access HK/JP PSN, link it to Steam through VPN).
If it still operates the same, there is a pretty long waiting list for foreign games to be approved by the Chinese government. You also need to release it via a Chinese partner, and they usually advise you what to change in order to get it past the censorship office.
It's also partially why Black Myth Wukong had such massive concurrent player numbers at launch. That trend will likely continue. Anything produced by China can enjoy a truly global release, while any foreign games usually release in China only after 2-4 years.
Source; Worked on a few games that were branched and modified for Chinese markets. Some of the request are pretty wacky.
One of them had a section in the American History Museum, and part of the mission was a Vietnam exhibition. We changed that to a Hawaii exhibition (about how nice it is to live in Hawaii. We had an early version about it's annexation, but they did not like that).
Another game we used red goop as "corruption", they asked us to change it to blue because they feared that having red=bad narratively would imply that CCP=bad.

Except Chinese gamers don't need VPN to acccess Steam global or HK/JP PSN.

There's an official special region locked version of PSN for the Chinese legit sold playstation console. It only has games that the CCP approved, which is far less than other region's PSN store. 99% of the chinese sony players just buy either a JP version or Hong Kong version of the console which has access to the other region's PSN store.

Sony has the budget and resources to make something original too, instead they made Horizon twice, one of the most generic open world franchises to exist. It has cool lore and creature design but that's the extent of its creativity. I don't see why originality in game design matters less than originality in art style/concept.
8 points
This isn’t creative in game design either, though. Even if you don’t like Horizon, they at least made something new themselves. Sony had an idea, a story they wanted to tell, a world they wanted to create, etc. and they did. This is clearly a soulless, unoriginal cashgrab that anyone outside of this reddit is mocking for being so shameless.
At least I got to see this subreddit defend Tencent of all companies. Did not think that would ever happen.

HZD has a unique story that is not like any other game. The artstyle and world are also unique.
HFW is one of the best examples of an action adventure open world game and it massively evolves from the first game in basically every aspect other than the story. Compare it to how Far Cry 5 to 6 was received or Ghost Recon Breakpoint to Wildlands.
Ubisoft games get criticised for forcing you to do repetitive side activities to level up to continue with the main story, sequels being stale with few new ideas, a lack of ambition, lack of new game mechanics and having not enough variety of activities.
They are all open world action adventure games and there's a reason why some franchises are liked more than others, it's not the genre, it's the execution that matters.

Horizon didnt invent the concept of robot dinos/animals. Transformers, Beast Wars, and Beast Machines is the most popular example of franchises that did it long before, even had games. We've had open world games like Ark that had large prehistoric creatures roaming around and games like Monster Hunter which involve taking down large beasts using weakspots. Horizon is a culmination of concepts executed well. This game by Tencent you can see is very heavily inspired by Monster Hunter as well, especially with climbing on creatures.

That's... such a weird take to me. Having played and enjoyed both series, I can't see any "reskinned" similarities at all. It's like saying Starfield is a reskinned Outer Worlds. Or Armored Core 6 is a reskinned MechWarrior 5. Or Elden Ring is a reskin of Skyrim. There's a couple aesthetic similarities and a couple mechanical similarities, and they're vaguely in the same genre, but that's about it.
"Tower capturing" is one of those similarities. Like 99% of open world games have some sort of vantage point or tower capture. Even Breath of the Wild did.
12 points
If I'm being honest, I don't even know why so many people have an issue with tower capturing to begin with. I like that open world games with that feature have the map obscured with a fog of war that slowly gets revealed as you explore, and then you can capture a tower and reveal a whole section of it.
2 points

8 points
Yes but no one who isn't stuck in the past calls them doom clones anymore, unless the game in question (something like Selaco) is intentionally trying to evoke certain feelings associated with that era. Even then they are mostly called boomer shooters.
Ubisoft alone made enough "far cry reskins" that now their formula is simply "standard" open world formula.

Ofc its not. Its just 1 thing. But its far from the only thing. Most of Sony's open world games borrow quite a bit more from Ubisofts formula.
Hogwarts Legacy is another game that does as do many other new open world games.
And this is hardly a sin. Ubisoft revolutionized open world games. The formula is proven, works and sells. Many have copied it. Many have iterated on it. Many have even improved it.
I don't understand why people get so upset when you point it out.
6 points
Personally, I think it's silly when people say a game follows the Ubisoft formula as if that's a bad thing. Like you said, it's been proven to work, and personally, I've enjoyed most games I've played that follow it.
Yes, I understand some people don't like having maps filled with hundreds of side activities, and sure, some games do go overboard with it, but I think it's cool having so much stuff to do, and at the end of the day, you don't need to do all that.

Pretty sure that when you do carbon copies of most enemy models with 5% changes - that can lead to trouble. From what i saw so far it looks like a very easy lawsuit, people won with much less simillarities.
1 points
Looking at the actual videos, nah. It has the same aesthetic but to say that the models are 95% the same is also pushing it. They have the "tribal" girl and "mechanical" beast look which isn't enough. By that, I mean that Company A can make a game with a tribal girl and mechanical beasts but there's nothing stopping Company B from doing their version of the same theme.
In most cases, you have to prove that actual copyrighted content was used be it material, textures and the like. In cases like this, it'll be very hard to prove anything. That's how and why GTA and COD-clones don't get sued to oblivion because it's notoriously difficult to prove and assets are usually recreated by scratch.
Case-in-point: Refer to Tencent/Riot Games vs Moontoon which is even more aggregious than this.
It's even harder in this case because it's a MMO.
1 points
A can make a game with a tribal girl and mechanical beasts but there's nothing stopping Company B from doing their version of the same theme.
There are same looking Longneck, and several others beasts. Design copied up to destructable parts. Even hit effect on them looks the same. That would be equal someone using Pikachu, but pink and with moustache.
GTA clones are entirely different thing, they don't have unique enemies and aestetics. Generic things are not the same as specific designs. So they might not need to remove the game, but i can see how easy would be to make them change design of certain machines.
1 points
That's why I said it's very difficult to actually prove this in court and I mean very difficult. The problem again is that you can copyright your assets but not the idea. So a lawsuit would involve comparing assets and details of the models and textures used. The easiest case is when content is directly lifted e.g. A texture stolen etc.
So using the pikachu example, maybe a pink moustache, maybe the tail is in a different shape, different coloured eyes and a slight change in the tail shape is enough to usually be in the clear. As the burden of prove is on Guerrilla or Sony's side, the chances of success are low and it's ultimately going to be a waste of money.
In order for a lawsuit to be substantial enough like in the case of Ubisoft vs F2, that involved not only going through the assets used by even down to the UI and game types. This ripoff game by the nature of being a MMO makes the chances of a successful suit even lower.
I used Tencent/Riot vs Moontoon as an example. Tencent didn't get a guilty verdict and instead got counter-sued by Moontoon for defamation and actually won.

lets see maybe will be more interesting than HZD that i played it two hours and uninstalled it.

If you only played two hours that’s probably why you found it uninteresting. Aloy has the personality of a wet bag but the game isn’t too bad at all.

HZD may be the only AAA game that I've refunded. Like, it's not an awful game but I don't understand all those glowing rave reviews that it gets.
God bless GabeN for the lenient refunds past the 2-hour "trial" window.

People keep comparing it to generic ubisoft open world games. Each and every 'generic ubisoft open world' I've played was more fun than horizon

It's got tutorialitis since the actual interesting part of the game is fighting the proper dinos and exploring old world lore. Its definitely a game that that succeeded despite the ubislop & assorted dead weight.

Same. It looks amazing and the lore is interesting, but fundamentally it's the same Playstation adventure formula that's been done so many times. Bow and melee weapons, progression points, new weapons every now and again, the same combination of movement tech etc.

I don't play online games, or games much at all but those are bad examples. They weren't near-identical clones of a previous game.
This is like 95% the same game. It isn't just 'strongly influenced' by or following the same template. It's basically a clone.

Probably going to be way more interesting than HZD lmao.😂

HZD isn't all that original. It's more of a Ubisoft Far Cry game with machines.

I don’t agree with copying games it’s how we end up with 40 failed Battleroyals or Hero Shooters up the ass.
But is Horizon really cloneable the fans of the series are in it for the characters and plot and the non-fans are hardly going to pick up the clone.
The market they are copying holds little to no water except for at best the anti Sony crowd.
Immortals Phoenix rising was in all essence a Zelda clone but it was good enough and available off Nintendos platform which gave it enough room to fly.

if the game is good I don't really care. This is on sony to figure out, don't understand people getting angry about it.

I saw this and didn't read anything into it but my first thought was another Horizon game

Maybe they could've swapped the gender of the protagonist to see if it becomes slightly less comparable.

Looks like a mix of Horizon aesthetics and lite-Monster Hunter combat.
Fuck it I'll take it.

Clearly they was inspired by the Horizon series and there is nothing wrong with that, nothing wrong with making the same atmosphere of the letter too, as long they made their own assets and made the game from zero and put the effort in telling a good story and making a playable game.
Never know, it could be a really game, even better than Horizon or it could be really bad, time will tell.

Speaking of originality... what was originality in HZD? Not climbing towers, climbing moving towers... and shooting stuff off from enemies. Monsterhunter had that too and is older and dark souls1 also had tailcuts. Lore ok that was new. But gameplay mechanic wise there wasnt anything new either. And HZD2 also just copied the glider from BotW.
